Wreck Epanomi

The imposing shipwreck of Epanomi is a popular summer destination for Greek and foreign tourists who visit the place to see the wreck and enjoy the sea. The ship, also known as the "shipwreck of Epanomi", sank in the winter of 1970 during the dictatorship. It was carrying out soil in order to "pinch" a unique habitat of natural beauty, where hundreds of species of fauna grow as well as about 2,500 flowers and plants.

All of this was ready to be sacrificed in order to create arable land. Residents of the area say that Agios Antonios (St. Antonios) saved the habitat. Without anyone knowing the reason, the ship was abandoned by the company that had undertook the project, it rusted and sank and this happened on the day of the feast of Agios Antonios. The ship has been in the same place ever since.

Today, almost 50 years later, the proximity to Thessaloniki, the diversity of the beach, the crystal clear blue-green waters and the eerie beauty of the ship, make the shipwreck of Epanomi one of the most popular beaches near the city and the wreck a tourist attraction.
