#272 MickMake Mail #46: LoRaWAN, PiJuice & dumpster diving.

This week's mailbag we have a LoRaWAN certified module that was sent to me by eWBM. I had a few issues getting that going, but it was a prototype after all.

Then there were a couple of products from the PiSupply guys - the PiJuice and the Flick gesture sensor. Pretty cool.

I noticed Tag-Connect headers on the primary side of the Pi power board. It would be interesting to see if one is a debug port(10 pin) and the 6 pin header programs the STM32. I love those Tag-Connect tools, they are easy to use and I recommend them to all our customers wanting to save space and money.

The problem with "commonly available" cell phone batteries is finding one that isn't counterfeit junk. Few buyers have the capability like many of us do to actually test capacity, so Chinese counterfeiters have a field day on Amazon, eBay, and, in my experience, even reputable battery sources. So, basically, the one you get with your phone or, in this case, a Pi power source is the last authentic cell you'll ever see. Lithium ion counterfeiting is rampant.

What a nice amount of motorized faders! Someone did a new install on a audio mixer... you can make cool things with them, what about a noce motorized teensy midi controller! Maybe with the new crazy teensy4 😬
About the gobo/color wheel, nothing special looks quite old, without the right lamp and lenses it will be difficult to get something done, and if they trashed it, probably it has burnt stepper motors (overheating is typical in moving lights)

Great to see you back! When I saw your channel pop up I knew what I had been missing :-) BTW - Have you checked that lorawan antenna with an antenna tester? The aliexpress antenna tester (cheapest - not a sponsor - model N1201) finds about half the products I buy have either a completely wrong, or marginally off frequency antenna. I'm often popping the plastic top off and trimming or extending the lead.

I'd definitely buy some of those sliders!

Had me worried to death, well almost, I do have stage 4 lung
cancer but I’m trying to avoid the dying bit.
Missed the videos as it always gives me a bit of knowledge (because I’m
thick not because you don’t cover the stuff well) and things to think
about.  Glad you are back.

This LORA stuff fascinates me but I haven’t made the leap,
there’s an investment and like I say I’m no expert when it comes to SBC.

The PiJuice is sorta like a tiny UPS for the Pi :)

Yet more evidence that you're down the street from a concert Audio/video/lighting company. The pattern is called a "gobo". The colors are "gels". Mount the thing on a swinging gimble and you've got a lightshow. If anything you've got a cool shelf decoration.

Mick, Python script has NO magic number! It is a text file! For a python script to be executable you need to add #!/usr/bin/env python as the first line.

Magic numbers matter only for binaries and even then not all binaries have them (it depends on the file format).
