Saint-Saëns-Debussy - Introduction and rondo capriccioso for two pianos (audio + sheet music)

"Introduction et Rondo capriccioso" op. 28 is among those compositions for violin and orchestra which Saint-Saens wrote for his Spanish friend Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908). This great violin virtuoso had been the most prominent figure among the violinists of his time due to his brilliant and temperamental way of playing that was an inspiration for many composers. He also performed this piece for the first time at Paris in 1864. Since then, this concert piece in one movement consisting of a slow introduction (Andante malinconico) and a rhythmically capricious Allegro ma non troppo (reminding of Spanish folk music as a homage to the bearer of the dedication) belongs to the best-liked works of its kind, especially at music contests and popular concerts.

While the version for violin and piano had been arranged by Georges Bizet, the adaption for two pianos was done by Claude Debussy in 1889, full of pianistic effects which make one forget the colourful instrumentation of the original. Like almost all musicians of his generation the young Debussy was an honest admirer of Saint-Saens who had not got a reputation until very late in his life. After 1900, however, he openly uttered his disappointment as Saint-Saens did not develop his style any further but opposed and criticised the young French composers like Debussy and his contemporaries.

Liszt would do it with just one piano. *and of course with 2 times more notes.

So wonderful and amazing. How did you find this? I never even imagine that it will be a piano arrangement.
It gives a different feeling to the violin... and both of them are so lovely!
Thanks for upload this wonderful piece Gsarci!

Many thanks for this rare gem! It shows how well Debussy knew the good old-fashioned technical capabilities of the piano too, even if he rather looked down upon 'pretty' music later on. That said, I love this piece too, and it was a treat to listen to in this wonderful arrangement.

I am slightly obsessed with this piece at the moment. It's so much fun to play (although it 100% kills my brain every single time) and I am so flipping excited to perform it in January.

Can't imagine what regard Debussy held for SS, but the piece is captivating and that alone may have contributed to such an excellent transcription. Debussy certainly loved the idea of captivating an audience. Of course, later it was on his own terms.

WOW So good! It's not hard to read, but hard to figure out the technique lol My 3 year abstain of practice ass won't be able to play this *sigh* Or who am I kidding, even before that I wouldn't be able to XD I will stick to Hanon and scales for now.

My favourite piece for violin and orchestra. It's interesting to hear how Debussy heard it.

Belle découverte !!! J'ignorais complètement cette transcription pour deux pianos de Debussy et je pense que je serai pas le seul dans ce cas. Mille mercis à thenameisgsarci !!!!

Darn… it looks like this transcription actually requires the use of two pianos rather than just two pianists on one piano…
