Answering Anxiety (2018)

In this podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Ken Ramey provide thoughtful, yet straightforward answers to these questions from the standpoint of a Biblical worldview. They explain that faith in Christ is the ultimate answer for our anxious hearts. We can’t trust a God that we don’t know; therefore, our relationship with Him is key. Though God deals with us gently and compassionately, at the same time, He requires us to conduct our lives according to His Truth – and that includes our thought lives. It means living, thinking, and feeling like we really believe that God exists, and that He cares for us.

We have done a follow up video on this topic that addresses the use of medication to treat anxiety and depression. The video will be published on November 7 2018 at 3:00 pm Central Time.

Thank you so much for this teaching. I really needed to hear this. I am planning a 28-30 hour road trip and I am so anxious about it. I hate driving large highways and roads with all those trucks. Please pray for me. Thank you.

I found the Answering Anxiety devotional about two or three weeks ago and it has truly changed my perception about anxiety. I have been a believer for many years and my Christian journey has been entirely beautiful and powerful. Although I am Christian, I am flawed like many. I suffered anxiety for that past year or so, and can only imagine it came from changing priorities around my life. God was no longer my first at a certain time in my life, and the series of events that followed broke my heart and led me to great sadness (this was my first biggest trial). However, as dark as that path was, God demonstrated His faithfulness towards me by never abandoning me, as promised. He showed me His grace, mercies, profound love, and His power through it all. My relationship with God became incredibly stronger because of that trial. But like I mentioned before, I am flawed, I suffered anxiety for a while but then I found the Answering Anxiety devotional. After reading about anxiety being a “pride problem” my days started to change. At first, I had a hard time seeing anxiety as a pride problem because I NEVER thought of it as pride. Then, as I continued to read it really hit me when I read “whether we recognize it or not, our anxious hearts say to God, ‘I trust me more than I trust You with me. I trust me to take care of me more than I trust you to take care of me.’” After reading that, I started to think about the roots of my anxiety and it was about control— not having control over certain situations, about the future, and so forth. Just reading that in this devotional and analyzing my anxieties, I have been working on letting it go with God’s guidance. What I have recently learned is as a child of God, I was never meant to be in control. He is in control, He is sovereign! He knows the plans he has for our lives [Jeremiah 29:11], and just like Dr. Ramey said we are to be obedient. Thank you for this video, Straight Truth Podcast! It was a perfect supplement to the devotional! God has placed a powerful season in my life that is eradicating my anxieties! :-)

There was a lot of truth and wonderful information in this video.I do not agree with everything in the above video though. I received my undergraduate psychology degree from a biblically sound Christian University. I am currently pursuing my Masters Degree in School Counseling from a Christian University. I believe that medication is sometimes necessary in an individual's life. Depression & anxiety disorders do affect individuals differently. The integration of medicine and counseling has shown to be effective in several studies. Though medicine is not always necessary for each person, the medication may help the person to cope and respond more effectively to counseling. Focus on the Family states: "Christians are not immune to anxiety disorders. One tragic notion that persists in some Christian circles is the idea that problems like anxiety are primarily, if not completely, spiritual in nature. Many Christians sincerely believe that a person should not experience anxiety disorders if he or she just has enough faith and trust in God. That is simply not true.

Well-meaning Christians may quote Scripture passages such as, "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear ... whoever fears has not been perfected in love" (1 John 4:18, ESV). This verse reminds us that God is greater than anything we will face in this world, and it assures us of the confidence we can enjoy when we stand before God someday. But it was not written as a pronouncement on anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders can affect a person's spiritual life, and spiritual issues may be interwoven with a person's anxiety, but to say that the person with an anxiety disorder should simply trust God more is like telling the woman with a broken bone that she should just have greater faith, and she will be well. We wouldn't scold or throw out-of-context Bible verses at a person with a broken bone. Why would we do that to a fellow believer who's suffering the torments of an anxiety disorder?

In a similar vein, some Christians disparage the use of medications in treating anxiety disorders or other mental health problems. But we wouldn't dismiss a diabetic who takes insulin as someone who obviously lacks trust in God. In the same way, we ought not to look at those who take medication for anxiety as somehow deficient in their faith.
