Not a fan of carbon or aluminium mountain bike frames? There’s always steel!

Steel frames have their own unique appeal; they have slinky, slender tubes that can create gorgeous, clean lines and they’re more easily repairable than carbon or aluminium.

Not only that, but the inherent qualities of the ferrous material steel frames are made from gives them a damped yet feedback-rich ride feel, with the “steel is real” phrase often thrown around for good reason.

So, if you’re looking to turn into a metal head, here are 5 steel-framed mountain bikes that should be on your radar!

Riding a Kingdom Vendetta as my go to for gnarlier stuff. With the improvements of geometry, brakes, suspension, cockpits, tires and points of engagements, hardtail frames are hard to overlook. More round up of bikes like this pleaase!

My super slack 4130 steel Marino hard tail is awesome. You can custom order pretty much any geometry specs you like, any colour and they’ll even engrave your own personalised logo onto the head tube. 👍

We're spoiled for choice of brilliant steel frames and they all look amazing, Pipedream's attention to detail and quality as well as sliding drops sold it for me. But that Reeb looks tasty.

I ride a torrent steep I built from frame up. I think it’s a less stiff version of the chromag rootdown, whom I consider the premier builder of steel

I bought a Pipedream Moxie last year. Unfortunately their sizing chart suggested a medium size, instead of small. The frame is really well built, but not much chance of fitting a decent dropper post due to the curved seat tube. It rode well, but is very stiff for a steel frame. I sold it due to always feeling it was too big for me. The new sizing charts have changed now, and suggest a small frame. I ride a Cotic Jeht which is a brilliant steel fs bike. Also have a Kona Honzo ST in a small size which fits me better. Don't expect any reply to emails from Pipedream as well. Be warned.

Tried to buy a Pipedream but their stance on customer service left me wanting to give my money to someone else. Seemed like an annoyance to have to talk to a customer. So I’m in the process of buying a Stanton.

Give me a steel bike over a plasticy crappy carbon frame any day of the week. The best mountain bikes ive ever had have been steel.

I was reading some old reviews of the Stanton Sherpa, think it was a 2014 model so geo was different and max travel was 120mm fork but the weight was actually impressive at 4lbs 5 Oz for a 17" or a small!
Considering most of today's more aggro hardtail frames check in above 7lbs that's impressive.
If I could have a custom steel frame it would likely have something like a 66 ha, 75 sta, 470 reach and built for a 130mm fork use 853 main tubes and cold worked chrmo stays to allow up to 2.8 tires.
The drive side might have a beefier chain stay...in my head I had imagined a single tube butted thicker in the center then tapered to the ends cold worked into a U and weld the bottom to the BB. A single tube acting as both chain stays. Maybe miter the BB shell to fit it. Never seen this done but thought it would be a cool concept to save weight while maximizing tire clearance.
Bet one of those Taiwanese places could draw up the tubing too.
Ahh, dreams.
