MADELINE & ROGER (Blue Mink)
Amazing evening at the Cadogan Hall, in Sloane Square yesterday (13th April 2024), with Madeleine Bell, plus The English Chamber Orchestra and Choir, with guest Roger Cook, and on piano Ian Shaw, with Conductor Matthew Jones, who brought this Melting Pot altogether! The show started with Madeline performing the gospel classics “Oh Happy Day” and “Open Our Eyes”, plus some big 60s hits “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me”, “Let The Heartache Begin” and “Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart”, and one of Madeline’s favourites “Climb Every Mountain”. Many more songs followed including a great rendition of the Shirley Bassey classic “I Who Have Nothing”. Madeline spoke about a song that Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway wrote for her, from the album “This Is One Girl”. Before she mention the song, she looked my way sitting on the second row at the front, and she read my lips “I Think I’m Getting Over You”. She gave me a smile and pointed to me, I raised my hand and gave her a thumbs up! Madeline was joined by Roger Cookie, where they part reunited the group Blue Mink, with the song “Melting Pot”. Many more songs including Dusty’s “Son Of A Preacher Man”, and also one of her own numbers “Without You (There Is No Me)” by giving credit to John Paul Jones who was in the audience. Roger Cook was also grilled by host Paul Gambaccini, reminiscing past memories of Coca Cola and “Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress”, and the two number ones recorded by George Strait “I Just Wanna Dance With You” and “One Night At A Time”. Roger performed medleys of various hits including “You’ve Got Your Troubles”, “Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart”, “Talking In Your Sleep”, “Lovers Of The World Unite”, “I Believe In You”, “My Baby Loves Love”, and of course “I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing”. Such a shame big Roger is usually accompanied by little Roger on these occasions, but due to health conditions he passed on this one, however he was there supporting them on the upper deck. After reminiscing with Paul Gambaccini, Madeline was again joined by Roger Cook, Alan Parker and Herbie Flowers, where they closed the show as Blue Mink, with their hit “The Banner Man”. It was great to catch up with some memorable faces before and after the show, including Roger Greenaway, Alan Hodgson, Harry Barter, Alan Parker, Joe Brown, John Harding, Jonathan Buxton, Jason Cook, Sabine Brignell, and of course me and my Sophie Sunshine guest for the evening lovely Leigh Hiller (Tony Hiller’s wife). Didn’t we all have a good time. Well done Roger and wonderful Madeline.
