I worked with Chinese people years ago in a lab (actually around the Tienanmen Square Massacre time) . We were growing carrots in pots which we didn't end up using, so we dumped them out and divvied them up. I was chowing down on a carrot and one of the Chinese walked into the room. He was horrified. It was later explained to me that the Chinese used 'night soil' (human sewage) on their root crops and would never eat them raw. I could not convince these guys that our raw carrots were safe and delicious. Oh, well, more for me.
