Metatarsal Fractures | Complete Anatomy

The metatarsal bones are five long bones in the foot. They articulate proximally with tarsal bones and distally with the phalanges.

The 5th metatarsal or the little toe is one of the most commonly fractured bone in football.

Fifth metatarsal fractures can occur due to low energy injury including twisting of the forefoot and stress response, or by a high energy trauma.

There are two muscles attached on the fifth metatarsal via their respective tendons, the fibularis brevis and fibularis tertius.
The pulling of these tendons can actually pull the bone away.

For immediate care, the patient may have a special boot fitted, to ease the weight they are bearing on that foot. Crutches also help to allow the foot to heal.

X-ray is the imaging modality of choice to confirm the diagnosis of the fracture.

After surgery, the patient enters rehabilitation. With proper care, they can make a full recovery within a 3 month period.

Fractured fifth metatarsal, placed in a non walking cast for 7 weeks, about to remove cast in couple days, can't wait. Saddened to hear recovery takes so long. Was hoping to leave Drs office walking 😢. Wish me luck😅

Just did fractured the base of my 5th metatarsal 2 days ago, got the X-ray today and it was confirmed. Been referred to an orthopedic surgeon but don’t want surgery. I feel if it’s placed together and wrapped in place it should heal on its own, dreading having to stay off my feet for weeks though

Snapped 5th metatarsal (Jones fracture): non-weight bearing (hard) cast @ 2 months; wheelchair @ 6 months; PT @ 2.5 months; walking boot @ 4 months; PTSD 4ever @ stairs, including escalators. (Longer recovery, wisely=No 'cutting'/anesthesia=no nerve injury)

I’ve had that and no one told me I need surgery. I was on cast and crotch for 2 month and broke my finger a month after I healed my foot...

Fractured my fifth metatarsal in my right foot in the summer before 8th grade. Didn’t need surgery thank God but had to wear a walking cast for about 3-4 months. I played soccer and i wasn’t able to play again for about 6 months.

I´ve broken 5th metatarsal running, twisted my ankle. I didn´t notice anything so wrong, so I walked around for 2 weeks with a broken metatarsal until I finally decided that something was really wrong and went to the doctor. Now I have my right food in an orthopedic boot for the next 4 weeks. I dont feel any pain, even before the boot I was walking with just a little pain. I´m a teacher, hours standing with that broken bone for 2 weeks...

i fell up the stairs chasing my womans booty and step on the side of my foot...feels like a slight fracture and this video helped confirm...never been to doctor for it but i feel like i get the same slight fracture damn near once or twice a year on either foot. i just balance my weight on the inner side of my foot for a few weeks, but its nice to know its an easy fracture to confirm my thoughts. ive broken my ankle before and the feeling is the same, tingly swollen and bruised.

I just got this injury today, I'm a 25f that has 3 babes under 4. Unbeknownst to me my babes decided to make a rock garden at the very end of the porch after the 2 steps ended. It was super hot today, 98 Fahrenheit, and I was leading the babes out for a swimming sesh as I'm a stay-at-home mom and love to entertain them, and stepped into the Rock Garden twisting and falling hard. I now have a hairline fracture.

I’ve have exactly the same fracture while playing basketball the pain is unbelievable and I’m about to have surgery in few hours; 2 days before my all foot swelling and now it’s kinda normal; I can move my fingers but still can’t walk.
PLEASE, HOW LONG THE RECOVERY TIME CAN TAKE BECAUSE I REALLY WANT TO WALK AGAIN NORMALLY AND VERY SOON 😭😭😭😭
