It’s contextual. If it’s from the right range it can absolutely work, if it’s from mid range or closer you won’t have the reflexes to respond in time. It’s not as black and white as you’re making it.

That’s why you use foot work, you can use your hand in front of you to block a jab but be prepared for whatever is coming next. Your defense is not limited to you hands to block but you can also add foot work or head movement. A simpler method is foot work by taking a small step back and lean slightly backwards and that creates a big range in distance and you opponent would not be able to reach you no matter what he tries. Shakur Stevenson does this all the time

I love how everyone has fight a fighting scenario but never executes the way they think in public.

ive seen guys just open palm tap punches off course and then counter punch. Seems more effective than grabbing onto his fist. I've never tried either

I've never seen a coach teach it the wrong way.

My coach was teaching me this when I still did boxing, and I knew that exact thing was what’s wrong with it. Thanks for clarifying it! 😁

I used to always tell my kids to always keep that hand up after they got done throwing a punch

If the punches are too strong, you'll end up with broken carpals.

Bivol does it all the time, but the only difference is that. He blocks it then and leans to the left while countering with a straight right followed by the left hook.
