A couple of days ago we showed you the ‘Mademoiselle’ designed by the Finnish architect Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1956 for Edsbyverken. We also have a pair of these highly similar chairs ‘Balett’, designed c. 1960 by Jan Hallberg for the competitor Nässjö Stolfabrik. As we mentioned in our post about the ‘Mademoiselle’ it’s actually partly made from chipboard. (Probably not one of the brightest ideas in Swedish design history.) When turning the ‘Balett’ upside down you luckily find solid wood. It’s obviously not as pretty, but when it comes to sturdiness ‘Balett’ is actually way better.
