It just seems that the French style of dressing and living has the right balance. Not overdone, just naturally practical and classy.

Love your style. I have been uplifted with your choice of style.
I am a double amputee and have cancer so I just want to feel good & comfortable.
Love the no none sense attitude.
Thanks again for the advice you are giving.

Respect, courtesy, kindness, dignity ~ these are things that will never go out of fashion, in my opinion. They reveal class in a way nothing else does.

Bonjour! I laughed when you said “Emily in Paris Look” 😂 We just got back from vacation in Paris. I have to say Paris had been Americanized somewhat, I saw fanny packs, leggings, short shorts, Hawaiian shirts, outdoor sandals, designer logos overkill, stilettos… everything goes. Of course on average there are more well dressed people in Paris than in any big American cities, it’s also because there are far less obese people in Paris. Thank you for making this video, we need to be reminded to dress respectfully and appropriately, and be mindful of the culture and occasion when in public. Paris is such a beautiful city, let’s hope it keeps its dress code. Merci!

It is fascinating to note that people who quite often look presentable at home seem to be taken over by madness while travelling in foreign climes. The reason oft given is I JUST WANT TO BE COMFORTABLE. Well one can be perfectly comfortable and still be quietly chic. I always feel that while visiting other countries we must show respect in our attire our manners and our general behavior. Imagine having lunch with friends. We like to look smart, well groomed and not at all over the top . This is such a simple message and yet one that many of us forget. If we imagine that we have a little Marie Anne suggestion book tucked away with our passports in our handbags which are not covered in fashion logos we should never go wrong.

Absolutely spot on! As an American I can always spot other tourists. One way I make traveling easier is to select fewer items in a limited color palette. I remember seeing “Sex in the City” when the SJP character went to Paris and wore an enormous tulle skirt with sky high white stilettos (to walk the streets no less!) and of course every outfit was over-the-top. I have never seen anything like that when I visit Paris. As you say, the French women wear tailored, simple, elegant clothing. They are neither garish nor sloppy. I love visiting your beautiful city and hope to return one day. Thank you for your good work.

My husband and I went to Paris in 2013 for our 20th anniversary. We were in the 16th I believe. We were able to walk to Eiffel tower even though it was a long walk. I wore mostly dark jeans, cotton sweaters a leather jacket ( we were there in Sept.) and had a, few scarves with me. I wore loafer type shoes except for dinner. I wore black cotton trousers with a variety of blouses and low heeled shoes. I'm pretty certain I was spotted as a tourist anyway. We did master the metro system and went all over using it. Loved Paris. Saw so much and ate so much!

Hi Marie-Anne, I had the huge priviledge of living in France for 5 years and I can assure you that your words of style and dressing wisdom ring so true in my opinion. I now live in another European capital and my observation also is that The European Style is indeed more traditional, so classic and elegant - not at all "contrived" or inappropriate. We can all take some lessons from your video today no matter where we live or where we travel. Thank you. xx

I had the pleasure of living in Paris for a few months some years ago. One of the things I did beforehand was to watch every video I could find that showed how to dress and act in Paris. I didn't want to look like a tourist! And, I was able to wear a casual, chic look that worked. As you mentioned, there are lots of pick pockets near the touristy sites for a reason - because they know how the typical tourists look and those are the people they target. It was wonderful to be able to walk the streets and not be mistaken for a tourist! Very good advice, Marie-Anne.

One of the nicest compliments I had in Florence was a local assuming I was one as well when she asked me a question in the post office. Googling photos of street scenes (in non-touristy areas) is a great way to get a sense of local style.

Thank you so much for this video! I’m super excited to go to Paris and I knew to dress nice but I love revealing clothes. So off to go shopping!

Thank you, Marie- Anne for your video. I was in Paris last week and I was in a shoe shop called Jonak buying a Mary Jane ballerina. A lady working there thought I was someone who lives in Paris. I took it as a compliment and thanked you with a smile. I was happy I didn't look like someone who came from Oslo. Fashion here among youngster are all about brands. In contrast to Oslo I thought young people in Paris chose vintage clothes and they look fabulous.

My travel look is always my comfortable straight cut jeans, comfy flats, scarf, square shirt and a trench like cotton jacket. I get cold easily so I wear thermals underneath.

Absolutely agreed, dear Marie-Anne. You never sound like a grandma to me, everything you say is music to my ears. This is the best advice from a true stylish French lady. That's why I've always loved French Chic since it guarantees timeless classic elegance and comfort effortlessly and I'm so glad to have been mistaken as a French in several ocassions which is a compliment. 'Stay respectful' is always the best reminder. Merci 💙🤍❤

10 days ago I returned from my dream trip to Venice. Most of the tourists I saw were dressed in t-shirts, shorts and backpacks... Meanwhile, I boarded my gondola wearing a fitted red linen dress, big black sunglasses, a cute hat with a black ribbon, black sandals and a big beige lace I can't understand how people go so I'm not dressed elegantly in a gondola strolling through Venice... When? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂Thank you dear Marie-Anne.... We hope from now ladies will do the effort 😘

As usual, excellent points. I would only add that a simple and comfortable outfit for travelling on the plane is essential. God forbid there’s an emergency, but it’s best to be prepared. I’ve just returned from six weeks in Portugal and Spain, on and off multiple flights and trains. Sturdy sneakers (all one dark colour, no bright stripes etc.), comfortable black bamboo pants and T-shirt, a linen/cotton shirt as a jacket (it was super hot weather), and a cashmere wrap. Perfect. Once there, I upped my game and dressed more appropriately for the venues I was visiting. P.S. Thanks for the mention of “Maid of the Mist”! 🇨🇦

Loved the video! Lots of useful information, some I would not have thought of. My hometown is near Niagara Falls, thanks for the Maid of the Mist mention!
