What Does Fill Power Mean? || REI

Fill power is a number you’ll see printed on down sleeping bags and down jackets designed for camping and backpacking. But, what does the number mean? In this video, Miranda explains what fill power is, how it affects the weight and warmth of a sleeping bag or jacket, and how you can decide what fill power is right for you.

I got the one on the left-- the REI Magma 850.. love it. Was out last night in 28degree F weather n was warm with long sleeve underneath. Super lightweight.

This was very helpful! I always just assumed higher fill power meant warmer but I see now it doesn’t always mean that. Thank you!

I was comparing jackets on the REI website last night. Perfect timing

Higher Fill Power is lighter and is warmer compared to lower fill powers, BUT, the amount of fill (weight) is a big factor in determining how warm it is.
I have a 750 Fill jacket. There are other jackets that are 850 Fill but are lighter. There are also other jackets with less fill, at 650, but are heavier.
Now, is there a way to determine which would be the warmest by a calculation or something?

I find synthetic insulated jackets to perform as well, or even better, than some down jackets. I own the REI Co-op Wallace Lake Sherpa Insulated Hoodie and it is the BEST jacket that I’ve owned because it both warms me up fast and keeps me warm better than all the other jackets I own (none of which were bought at REI). So instead of looking at the numbers, really go out of your way to visit a store and try a jacket on to see if it fits your needs. I would never have known how amazing my REI jacket is if I hadn’t worn it in person.

Eddie Bauer has 650 up to 1000 and there prices are far considering other companies charge a bit more money 😊

I am not sure on how this works after the video. So I am looking at 640 fill power down jacket. Is it good enough for Annapurna Base Camp end of summer period?
