Mmmm yes Life in Technicolor is one of the best openings to an album! With Floyd I'm surprised you didn't choose Any Colour You Like; that song always leaves me hearing something new and is one of the best synthworks ever imo

John I would REALLY recommend you start listening to post-rock. It's mostly just instrumental, with very long cinematic soundscapes and such. Listen to the albums Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place by explosions in the sky. Very crescendo based, starting pretty soft and growing to an intense climax. Great for driving.

as someone who listens to mostly instrumental music I wasn't sure what to expect out of this but whoa I did not at all expect Air on this list, been a huge fan of those guys since I was in like 5th grade and awesome to see more love for them, those guys really deserve better in general
I would also recommend stuff like Nightmares On Wax "Les Nuits", Four Tet "Hands" (and the whole Rounds album), Future Loop Foundation "The Sea & The Sky", 808 State "Pacific 202", Hybrid "Finished Symphony" or BT "Good Morning Kaia" as some other awesome instrumental songs, some of these are also on the longer side but like Air there is very much that accessibility to these like you mentioned and they are all super captivating (I could go on with more examples but I'd be stuck here forever lol)
