So be it, I'm your crowbar
If that's what I am so far
Until you get out of this mess

And I will pretend
That I don't know of your sins
Until you are ready to confess
But all the time, all the time
I'll know, I'll know

And you can use my skin
To bury secrets in
And I will settle you down

And at my own suggestion
I will ask no questions
While I do my thing in the background
But all the time, all the time
I'll know, I'll know

Baby
I can't help you out
While she is still around

So for the time being, I'm being patient
And amidst this bitterness
If you'll just consider this
Even if it don't make sense all the time
Give it time

And when the crowd becomes your burden
And you've early closed your curtain
I'll wait by the backstage door

While you try to find
The lines to speak your mind
And pry it open, hoping for an encore
And if it gets too late, for me to wait
For you to find you love me, and tell me so
It's okay, don't need to say it.

I was expecting her to say “I’ll Know” at the very end, but she didn’t, which explains a lot. Genius

There's more drama in this 5min video than in 99% of movies made today. An unparalleled talent.

The poet of my heartbreak. She makes me a masochist.

Most musicians and singers distance themselves emotionally from their material for the purpose of performance. Fiona Apple is one of the few who doesn't. I don't know how she manages it, and it must be exhausting, but I for one am thankful for the honesty of her delivery, every time.
End up in damn tears every time though.
Needed it though. Thanks.

I know this is about a messy love triangle or what have you but it works so so well as a song about loving someone with an addiction

One of the most beautifully painful songs ever written. Pure genius. Been in love with fiona for over 25 years. She'll always be my favorite.

In '96 when Tidal came out along with the story how it all came about I was blown away. I thought to myself "This girl is a prodigy." As a musician myself I genuinely appreciated the artistry she wove in her songs and the poetry of her lyrics. On top of maintaining musical integrity she wrote songs that were catchy and appealed to the heart and common man or woman. I wasn't sure it Tidal was a one off or not, and was concerned that the industry would likely ruin her anyway, but when "When the Pawn..." came out and I was blown away I realized that "Tidal" wasn't a one-off and she was a rock that wasn't budging when it came to writing garbage products the industry wants you to write and what she wanted to write.

Then as the other albums came out and she progressed and evolved musically and wrote with the same integrity and honesty I realized that we have a musical genius on our hands and how blessed we are to have someone like her in a day and age when most musicians can't read music (hip-hop and pop come to mind), buy a song from an unknown songwriter or sample music that isn't their own because they can't actually write, and throw in some dancing and a video and voila: you have a "musician."

Fiona is up there in terms of musical genius with the Mozarts, Beethovens, Hendrixes, Led Zepplins, Pink Floyds, Ella Fitzgeralds, Etta James, Beatles, etc. It shocks me when I talk to my friends about her and they aren't familiar with much.

I'm a huge fan and love all her albums. But this is my all time favorite song, from her or anyone else.

I'm just going to say it. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. From the lyrics (poetry) to the song writing to the vocals. If you love this song do yourself a favour and look up Elvis Costello singing it (this song) in front of Fiona. He said the song struck him. Quentin Tarantino is enamored with her. Dave Navarro wrote her name in his own blood on her dressing room wall. She doesn't get the mainstream recognition she deserves but she's the type of talent that other talent looks up to.

Liking the rawness of this. Intimate, emotional, vulnerable.

I saw someone say "this is feeling" and it got me thinking about the similarities between Fiona and Jeff Buckley. Fiona channels this powerful emotion in her music and it's absolutely breathtaking. Similarly, Jeff Buckley channels spirituality. It's the same effect of feeling, same effect of songwriting, great vocals and I will never grow bored of either of them.
