I love how invested people have been in my hair getting curly. My hair in this video is as curly as it’s ever been (this is the naural look). But next week, it’s back to the classic wave because this hair is too much work.

Every culture has their own versions of sugary, deep-fried bread, and I think that's beautiful.

Their sassy remarks were hilarious to read 😂

“Do you think this is cute? Give me back my napkin or I’m going to write poems about it!” lmao

I find it amusing how Martial kepts dissing Caecilianus for his lack of manners, yet apparently he kept inviting him to his dinners. Maybe he just needed to make sure never to run out of material for his scathing poems.

I love that this guy wrote a whole Mean Girls style Burn Book about Caecilianus being a terrible dinner guest.

Max, it's so obvious why Martial kept inviting Caecilianus: Who else was he going to diss all the time? People probably relished the opportunity to see what outrageous stunt Caecilianus would do for Martial to rag him about the next day.

I love that writing scathing poems about somebody was a genuine threat in Ancient Rome.

Top notch.

You get a free recipe.
You get a very unique recipe.
You get an ancient recipe that could easily be lost to time.
You get top tier story telling.
You get a top tier history lesson.

When everything has a cost, and that cost keeps rising, let's be grateful Max and team are continually churning out these substantial gifts for free; because I feel like I'd pay for this.

My favorite part of Tasting history is finding things in common with people who lived THOUSANDS of years ago. Wrapping some hors douvres in a napkin before heading out is a timeless move

I love that unswept floor mosaic. It's a type of art you can easily imagine someone making today. Really fun.

"It is not for tomorrow that I invited you to dine." is such a fantastic quote.

As someone who's worked in kitchens for 14 years, toothpaste consistency is absolutely an appropriate culinary term. Love the content. Been here since the beginning

I think this dish survived until today. I was in Trieste a couple of years ago and one of the local snacks was a deep fried spiral, made with batter from mascarpone, olive oil and flour, with icing sugar on top. No seeds and different cheese, but close enough.

That's really interesting that they called 11 am 'the fifth hour'. We still do that in Rwanda, in Kinyarwanda. 11 am is 'saa tanu' (tanu from gatanu, meaning five). I think this was adopted from Swahili, a lingua franca invented to bridge the communication barrier between Bantu Africans and Arabian traders. But the day begins with 'saa moya' - hour one, which is 7 am. This is always one hour after sunrise because we're on the equator, so the sun always rises at 6 am. I wonder if in Rome the 'first hour' changed throughout the year or stayed the same?

I was wondering why Poliwhirl was chosen as Background Pokemon in today's video on dining etiquettes but after seeing they type of food that you'll make, it makes sense 😂😅

Appropriately with this episode about dining together, I am reminded again of something, that I know, but keep forgetting: The casual and personal "speaking to the viewer / the audience" style of presentation Max has; essentially one half of an imagined conversation of a host to their guest; is incredible production. It´s as difficult to create this illusion for us *without* Max actually having a conversation partner there, as he makes it seem natural, welcoming and relaxed. You gotta really step back and appreciate, that how you´re allowed to *feel* as a guest in the same room listening to him is a result of *craft* .

We still have Globi here in Germany! (Former Roman city here)
They are called “Quarkbällchen“ and are basically the same (mostly quark and flour). Though the honey has been replaced with sugar, unfortunately.
(And they also suck if deep-fried in anything vegetal.)

I’m gonna make myself some honey and sesame Quarkbällchen now! Maybe with extra grated lemon peel.
