Ewan MacColl And Peggy Seeger sing the ballad 'The Trooper and the Maid' (Child #299) from their 1960s Prestige album 'A Lover's Garlan'. This version is more serious sounding than the earlier one in their 1959 Tradition album 'Classic Scots Ballads.' This ballad was popular with Scots country singers and the song has versions from the United States. MacColl's liner notes for the Tradition album state that the song's "theme is a common one, for soldiers have been leaving young maidens at strategic moments for many centuries...always with good intentions" and the song outdoes other similar ones in "high spirits and robustness."
