I started doing some milling this week and noticed a design flaw when using the logosol big mill basic and a Stihl 066 chiansaw. I'm curious if anyone has had a similar problem and if you have a solution.

Hi!

Taken from the manual on page 10.

When the chainsaw is mounted, check that the exhaust is not directed towards the scale bail on the Timberjig. If that is the case, the chainsaw must be moved inwards in its track so that the distance between the exhaust and the scale bail increases. Alternatively the exhaust fumes can be diverted from the muffler’s exhaust with a thin piece of sheet metal which is screwed to the muffler or the like (always confer with the chainsaw manufacturer about such an addition). If the dimension plate is positioned so high that it gets near the exhaust, you should let the Timberjig cool at regular intervals. Let the Timberjig cool if it feels hot. Never let it get hot. Always use protective gloves.

Hope it helps!

I have no experience with the mill but I am a heat expert (heating and ac) thinking that muffler is directly aiming the exhaust on the wheel, I like your heat shield thought that should work. Leave a nice big air gap between shield and bracket, or see if there is any kind of metal wheel or maybe just a metal bearing instead? Do they make an aftermarket muffler with different discharge?

Definitely think that it is an issue of heat build-up. I would probably fix it by modding the muffler by adding some secondary ports on the muffler. I would probably go about it by blocking off the factory port and weld in a new deflector either on the front, or the opposite side of the muffler. That should lessen the heat buildup for sure, and perhaps even make the saw run more efficiently.

try changing the roller with a steel roller, however mite have to have one made, or can you make a deflector

That is very interesting. Thanks for posting the video. I'm in the process of either purchasing the Logosol or the Norwood chainsaw mill. haven't made a decision. Keep us posted if you find a positive correction.

Sorry, I can't help with your issue, but are you using a different camera? Higher resolution?
Something different about this video...
Looks great.

Take care

Hi. I am using a Big mill basic with a Stihl MS 361. I haven't noticed any heat problems so far but after seeing this I will watch for it. I have the saw positioned the same way you have it.
