I just saw Cody for the first time last night. During his meet and greet I asked him to play this song live in Tacoma. He chuckled and said maybe, he thanked us and walked off stage. I was disappointed but I knew it wasn’t on the set list so I didn’t expect to hear it. He came back out 3 minutes later and played travelin solider. Nearly brought me to tears!! Thank you

I'm not even embarrassed by how many times I've listened to this. It's so peaceful and emotional. I need it in my life forever.

A great version. I'm a retire AF Vietnam vet, makes me think of all those who didn't make it home. They will never be forgotten. Thanks you.

My mom used to let me sing my heart out to her on Snapchat. Whether it was good or bad, she said it made her day. Cody Johnson’s version was one of the last songs I sang to her before she passed away this April. Love you mama.

The rest of mainstream country needs to take notice of what this guy is doing! THIS is what real country is!!

I know it’s cliché to say that a cover is better than the original.
But holy damn, this is the most heavenly thing I’ve ever heard.

This one is without a doubt the best version of the song. He really poured his heart and soul into it. God bless the US armed forces!

Being 18, I had enlisted 1 year before September 11th, 2001. I did two tours overseas right after the attack and lost close friends of mine to war. The dixie chicks version of this song was out at the time and this brings back so many memories. Im tearing up right now just listening to it. thank you.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Two days past eighteen
He was waitin' on a bus in his army greens
Sat down in a booth in a cafe there
Gave his order to a girl with a bow in her hair
He's a little shy so she give him a smile
And he said, "Would you mind sittin' down for a while
And talkin' to me? I'm feelin' pretty low"
She said "I'm off in an hour and I know a place we can go"

So they went down and sat on the pier
He said "I bet you got a boyfriend, but I don't care
Cause I got no one, to send a letter to
Would you mind if I sent one back here to you?"

[Chorus]
I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
"Too young for him, " they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Nevermore to be alone
When the letter says, "A soldier's comin' home"

[Verse 2]
So the letters came from an army camp
In California then Vietnam
And he told her of his heart, it might be love
And all of the things he was so scared of
He said, "When it's gettin' kinda rough over here
I sit and think about that day on the pier
And I close my eyes and see your pretty smile
Don't worry but I won't be able to write for a while"
[Chorus]
I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
"Too young for him, " they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Nevermore to be alone
When the letter says, "A soldier's comin' home"

[Verse 3]
One Friday night at a football game
The Lord's Prayer said and the anthem sang
And a man said, "Folks, would you bow your heads
For a list of local Vietnam dead?"

Well, cryin' all alone underneath the stands
Was a piccolo player in the marchin' band
And one name read, and nobody really cared
Except that pretty little girl with a bow in her hair

[Chorus]
And I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
"Too young for him, " they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Nevermore to be alone
When the letter says, "A soldier's comin' home"
When the letter says, "A soldier's comin' home"

I was born in 1970. Sometime in the early 90s my mom visited a traveling display of the Vietnam memorial wall. She found a name on the wall and I watched her start crying. She told me she had a boyfriend before my dad and he was killed in Vietnam. My mom has since passed away.
I always think about that when I hear this song.

What I love the most of these stripped down sessions is Cody’s demeanor. His eyes are closed 99% of the song. You can tell he is just as caught up in the emotions of this song as we are listening to it. Takes a special kind of artist to “tear your heart out when they sing” as George Jones would say. Absolutely love the amount of passion and vulnerability he shows to help us put ourselves on his songs. And how he relays it in the lyrics especially in the songs he’s written himself.
