I felt Linus perfectly summed it up in his tweet:

"Imagine if Amazon hid 1-star reviews so you could send your feedback to the seller but no one else could see the product was crap.
Sounds like a super sensible move to me."

The most plausible theory I read about YouTube's agenda is that a viewer will now be forced to watch more duration of a video, hence more ads, before realising that the video is not right. Currently, in case of huge number of dislikes, viewers may end up not watching it through and instead skipping to something else.

There was Windows 98 SE, so actually Microsoft did it before Apple.

Hence it's not lazy, it's retro ;)

Removing the dislikes entirely is a big disservice to the users of the platform. If you feel "threatened" by the dislikes, just disable them for that particular video. People will just redirect their dissatisfaction in the comments which is worse. What's next, blocking comments entirely?

Regarding the removal of the dislike button, I think it's wrong and I already see this being used to manipulate public opinion. Louis Rossmann made a nice video on this topic.

The problem is, YouTube doesn't realise it's something different from Twitter, FB, etc.
It's NOT only a social media platform.
And if it really cares about creators, there are much MUCH better solutions...

YouTube putting the "potential feelings" of content creators over viewers is a huge mistake. People go to YouTube and other platforms for the social experience. They should be ADDING more feedback options not taking them away. The dislike ratio tells me things like: 1. Is this a real video or something fake or trolling? 2. Is there something controversial or interesting about the video. 3. Is there something reprehensible about the content that needs to be highlighted. Many times content creators create videos based on the dislikes of other videos. Hiding this feature means this is no longer possible.

Already this is effecting me negatively because I started watching a fake trailer for a show and I almost watched the whole thing before realized it was fake. The dislike ratio would have told me that right away. I shouldn't have to read a bunch of comments on a video to figure out if something is wrong with it or not. YouTube is opening the door to a lot of scams and fake content by getting rid of the dislike ratio.

Me: "Windows 11 SE, that soon?"
(Old enough to remember upgrading to Windows 98 SE)

I just want a YouTube competitor man. I’m tired of some of these dumb decisions.
The double ads, the constantly ridiculed copyright system that just really hampers communities like the f1 YouTube commentary group. Maybe Nebula gets bigger or maybe Twitter releases a competitor idk.

No don't remove the dislike button, at least we can imagine that someone actually cares about what we think of their content.

Please add comments to nebula I would watch way more content there if that was the case. It just feels empty cause the discussion is a big part of you and other creators there!

Was just wondering if you'd post today 😄

Already youtube screwed up comment section by filtering now the dislike button. They are just removing genuine opinion no videos. Not a good move at all. At the end of the day we are addicted to this apps and we will get habituated to this new option as well

I think you're underestimating how embarrassing it is for governments when their press releases/ect get extremely disliked. I doubt it's even the governments that are making a big fuss, but that youtube finds it embarrassing that their users will routinely dislike "official government press" significantly.

The argument about brands doesn't have anything to do with ads I'm not sure how you made that connection. It's for corporate YouTube channels and their videos

Removing the 'dislike' number is as bad an idea as removing the number on comments was. It adds to the potential for YouTube to become just another "one-way" medium, in an era when we still have too many of those.

It's about money.... Viewers immediately skip a video if they find dislike counter higher than like. That results in they don't even watch ads... Now we are forced to watch an ad then content. Basically it's spamers and YouTube gonna benefit.... Shameful

Thank god, youtube finally removed the dislikes. Someone could've felt the slightest discomfort or even worse, get their little feefees hurt. Oh wait, creators can still see it. Such sensible, much protect, wow! Smells like additional ad revenue for business daddy to me 😬
