Tested: Skydio R1 Autonomous Drone Review

We review the Skydio R1 Frontier Edition, the first autonomous drone we've tested that lives up to its promises of hands-free flight! We're so impresssed by the Skydio R1's ability to navigate around obstacles and track fast-moving subjects--its movements were almost otherworldly. Watch it chase us as we try to evade it!

“Things like a basketball we tried throwing at it, that definitely knocked it out of the sky.” Laughed so hard

Give the man a beer, someone that knows the difference between a quad and a drone.

This is really a better product than most drones on the market currently for sports users like myself, I have a Mavic Pro and often I just don't take it along with me to my trips because I end up being distracted by the gadget instead of doing what I'm out there to do. This hands free fire and forget type drone (and one that actually works as advertised), will be a huge game changer, I look forward to seeing more affordable (and better image quality, but that's a none issue, cameras are cheap) iterations in the future.

The amazing thing is that most of the things that need improvement is all software based for the most part. There is a bit of hardware upgrades that could be nice such as camera quality and battery and whatnot. All in all, a very good thing for the future.

10:11 I think someone from Skydio said, they don't use the wide FOV 4k camera for subject tracking. High resolutions are prohibitive for image recognition algorithms right now. Most likely, only those other 12 (probably low res) cameras are used for that.

The proof of concept is great, if this is improved upon in the future there is large possibility of this type of technology to blossom and I hope to see improvements to the quality and tracking in the future

I can see this being enough for travel vlog type videos and shows to get nice b-roll, hopefully enoguh people buy this so it has a better chance to improve this type of tech in the future (you know, offer and demand 'n stuff)

A question: Why don't all quadcopters/drones have multiple-bladed props? It looks like most of them use a 2-bladed prop.

Thanks for the correct definition at the outset! Fully autonomous flight modes aren't legal for use in the UK unless you're military or have permission. I doubt that will stop people using them. That said this is incredible.

Great review guys! Thanks.
I'll be sticking to my miniquad for the sports "tracking" though... Now how to fly backwards ;)

Wow. Now this is impressive. After DJI attempts i thought this good tracking and obstacle avoidance was way further in the future. Video quality and agility are easy fixes in the future. Just looking at the speed that hardware is advancing.

Super cool that this drone is aware of its surroundings, but the footage doesn’t look very good.

Would it avoid clear glass in a hockey rink? And could you set it to follow at a specific height? as in can you tell it to follow but always at 15 meters height

So what are the thoughts on the kid that put a pistol on his drone capable of firing at command?
