I use a leaf blower for all the dust, leaves, and seeds that find their way under the hood. Clean battery top dirt off by wiping. Detailed one car's engine bay to sell it, but no high pressure water! Lots of rags and wiping along with something to help break up any bits of grease/oil here and there. Maybe something like armor all to shine up hoses, the beauty cover, wires. etc.

I ran a detail shop for over a decade. If you take care not to blast the connectors, and basically just rinse the engine bay, you can wash an engine no problem.

We had a fleet of over 30 Lincoln town cars and suburbans. Never once did I have any issues with washing, even with degreasers. Those cars we clocking upwards of 400k miles before leaving service, and they had an engine dress once a week.

When I was a kid in the early 1980s, I overheard a family friend, who was an automotive mechanic, tell my father, who was an aircraft mechanic, that if he didn't like a customer he would advise them to wash their engine in order to make them have difficulties and have to pay him more money. He laughed. The only reason to hose off an engine is if you accidentally spill corrosive chemicals on the engine. Water goes in the radiator only.

Sometimes a leaf blower, and just a wet cloth wiping everything, not dripping with water, and an plastic bristle brush to get any mud or oil buildup.

I remember my boss having me powerwash engine bay on 1998 Chevy Astro. Never hurt anything, but I wouldn't do it. What I do today is steam clean areas of the engine. Get the engine warmed up. Spray on some degreaser to soak in, scrub with a brush, then steam it and wipe off with a rag or old tee shirt. Steamers are relatively inexpensive.

Always cleaned engine bays. Never a problem if you know where to avoid and blow out sitting water. Often it’s much easier to see a fault early with a clean bay.

This great man is genius. I never wash under my hood. ""Do you eat on your car's engine"". Real words from the best mechanic

dirt and soot acts as insulation which traps heat. if you live in a hot climate the engine becomes less efficient and more prone to overheating if its dirty

Spot on! I made this mistake when I bought my first new car back in the 90s. And yes, messed up a bunch of components. So...never wash your engine!

My weekly car washes, sometimes more times a week, since I got my license in 1980, have included a spray down of engine compartment. Avoiding the air intakes and the injectors and plug wires, I'd give it a thorough spray down with rinse water. Still do it to this day. 7 vehicles later, traded or sold over time, , and still no issues. My oil change guy (who gets oil way cheaper than I can), appreciates it for sure. And since I do most of my own repairs it's nice not to have to go into a mess of an engine.

Back in the day I would clean my engine’s with spray Gunk and water all you had to do was throw a bag over the carb, alt, and distributor no problem wish we could go back to those times.

1-2 a year Engine Foam and a gentle rinse with a garden hose I think any problems occur when people use a high pressure spray My .02

Mostly right. If you know what your doing and what to not spray down then your fine. Better yet if you bag up and tape off your fuse box and your ecm your just fine. Use a specific engine cleaner and do not use a power washer. Your engine bay is meant to get wet. Sincerely another mechanic who has never had a single issue cleaning engine bays on big rigs AND cars.

I use the tire cleaner and rinse at the local wand wash!
Not often but I’ve never had a problem!

Thank you for this tip Scotty. The only reason I ever did it was that my friend in high school who detailed cars would do so. But he probably picked up that bad habit from someone else. I never thought personally it would be a good idea because of the electronics.
