How The Jehovah's Witness Corporation Solicits Money.

As a publishing company, Watchtower amassed considerable wealth from the sale of literature from the 1800's to the 1990s. There was no need to resort to the same collection efforts typical of other religious groups. This changed in 1990 with a tax ruling against Jimmy Swaggart. In 1988, Jimmy Swaggart was taken to court in the case Swaggart Ministries v. California Board of Equalization. This was with regard to paying tax on profit derived from sales of religious material.

Realizing a ruling against Swaggart could result in the sale of Watchtower publications being taxed, Watchtower filed as friend of the court to show support for Jimmy Swaggart Ministries retaining tax exempt status. The Supreme Court ruled against Swaggart on January 17th, 1990, ordering him to pay back taxes.

Well, the sale of Watchtower publications fell under this ruling. Watchtower decided that rather than pay tax on the money it was receiving from the sale of Watchtower literature, it would be better to direct Jehovah's Witnesses to start asking for donations from people who accepted Watchtower journals in the house to house ministry work. This led to a decline in income.

This is a good video. When I was young in the 80's there was a kingdom hall building boom. These halls were built with small dollar contributions and the free labour provided by the members. Now these properties are the property of the Org to be sold off on command with the funds trickling up to New York.
In the age of instant information, how can anyone be suckered into giving their only tangible turn at life to a real estate company in new York?

They've always been a money making machine, under the guise of a non-profit religion. As always mentioned, keeping members ignorant and in relative fear of "not pleasing Jehovah" has served them well for many years, until now. The onset of social media, videos, writers, etc., who are doing as you are, open a lot of eyes and hearts - I hope. Back in my active days, when I was on the cusp of being named an elder, the circuit and district overseer were in our congregation for the week, in anticipation for the upcoming convention. I bought into this Tony Morris-like request and took both of them out (and their spouses) to lunch, a lunch I could not afford. The circuit overseer said something I never forgot. He came from a long line of jewelry store owners. I guess he felt I was more capable mentally than most of the people he shepherded and said, "You know, all these people we visit, they bust their heads out working and take us out to eat, and give us cash. It's the best gig I've ever had, and tax free!" I should have opened my eyes then to the farce this is, but I was well indoctrinated.

Donation arrangement makes more money! Great business sense! When I went back to meetings the book prices were not available they asked for a donation! I didn't know how much books were worth only Barns and Noble cost. I gave a donation of twenty dollars for one Insight book!
Never bought another book!
