Hey Tdrummer - you can set Firefox up to do the same thing. Chrome is just the only browser that automatically prompts you to adjust this setting, as far as I know.

Sorry cut me off early. In Firefox, go to Options > Options > Applications and search for "mailto" in the Content Type column, and then select "Use Gmail" in the column to the right of that, which in Firefox 13 is called "Action"

Hello, thank you for the fast response.
Yes - I do have "allow sites to handle requests" checked.
Yes - I'm using chrome, version 23.0.1271.17 beta-m. I have the same problem with the stable version.
I found a work around by installing an extension from the Chrome Web Store called "Mailto: for Gmail" but I would still be interested to know how to get chromes "Active Protocol Handler" list back.

I've got exactly the same issue: no protocol handler to select...

Interesting..I don't think I've heard of that before. Do you have the "allow sites to handle requests" radio button selected? And you're using Chrome right? If you could let me know your version of Chrome I'd be happy to do some research for you.

Quick question, how do you "add" a protocol handler?
My box is completely empty, I have nothing to choose from.

I'm guessing since I use Firefox that I am unable to do this.
