update: Unfortunately, the third method is only temporary... When I restart my laptop, all the icons on the desktop return to normal, but when I shut down my laptop and turn it back on, the icons turn into black boxes again. After searching on Google, it turns out that my desktop icons could become black boxes because at one point I had removed the arrows on the icons to make the desktop icons look cleaner. I had added a new entry to 'Shell Icons' in the registry editor at that time. Then I thought, 'If I delete it, the icons might go back to normal.' And as a result, everything returned to normal. Everything is fine now, even after shutting down the laptop multiple times, the icons remain intact.

I don't know if anyone else is having the same with you I'm happy but all the methods work but as soon as my computer gets shut off our power is off it's right back to where it started and I don't know how to keep it from happening

If none of the 4 method works, then delete this
%windir%\System32\shell32.dll, -51 and restart.

The black square will disappear + shortcut arrow will also disappear. Both disappeared in mine case and not reverting on restart. Try once.

The third one worked, but then I restarted again, and I have the same issue. Same thing happened with my last temp fix which was doing a disk cleanup. I don't know how to permanently fix this.

Method 2 worked for me as I didn't want to go that far into the video and really tried to work with Method 2. I couldn't run the commands because it said I needed to be Admin even though my account was already admin. So I just pasted the commands into the windows search and thus came up the 'run as administrator' and I did all of the commands like that.

keep value name "29"
click ok.
