Ethan Hawke, Cedric Kyles & Paul Schrader On 'First Reformed'

Reverend Ernst Toller is a solitary, middle-aged parish pastor at a small Dutch Reform church in upstate New York on the cusp of celebrating its 250th anniversary. When a pregnant parishioner asks Reverend Toller to counsel her husband, a radical environmentalist, the clergyman finds himself plunged into his own tormented past, and equally despairing future, until he finds redemption in an act of grandiose violence. From writer-director Paul Schrader comes a gripping thriller about a crisis of faith that is at once personal, political and planetary. BUILD hosted Schrader, Ethan Hawke and Cedric "The Entertainer" Kyles as they discussed the new film, "First Reformed."

Days after seeing First Reformed I'm still stunned and shocked by it. I loved it and am so grateful it got made.

Ethan was absolutely right about how religion is usually portrayed in movies. It's either mocked, vilified, or whitewashed into mindless propaganda. Religion, and particularly Christianity, has been wildly misrepresented in the movies in recent years, so it's great to see a serious film by someone who really knows what he's talking about and knows how to make movies. I hope this film is well received. And we need an Oscar nomination for Paul Schrader already.

Wow. Paul Schrader is so wise. And this is such an interesting team of talent. A great film.

Is it true that Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody got the nominations instead of this stunning and beautiful film?

First Reformed is clearly the most accomplished film this year, a film that allows for a truly political analysis and portrayal of the world that capital has constructed for itself against people. Everything in this beautifully modulated film speaks to the private tragedy of our human condition.

love the concepts from the director about the music .. so many films treat me as if i am stupid, with their soundtracks

First, this is an extraordinary film. The most extraordary thing about it is that it is the first non-documentary film I have ever seen whose central theme is the climate change crisis. Why is this not even mentioned? We are facing runaway catastrophic climate change and it is not even mentioned by this interviewer, nor raised by the any of those interviewed. This boggles my mind and disturbs me as it mimics the way so many of us are walking blindly over the cliff of extinction.

Did you notice Mary called him by his first name (Ernst) at the end. She usually called him Reverend?

Transcendental style in film as perfected by Robert Bresson is still the best way of working with the actual medium of film. Looking forward to go see this movie.

The film is already on line to rent ... did it ever play in theaters? Maybe it will have limited run once Oscar nominations come out?

Why the hell is no one talking about Cedric's great performance? I didn't know the guy could legit act, and I had no idea that he was a great dramatic actor. For most of this interview, he's ignored. It's Cedric The Entertainer who's criminally underrated

There is no faith without works and there are people that suffer in life and they offer there pain to God for salvation of humanity and saints that have being chosen to suffer and offer it for humanity's salvation. And there have being even now that tragically accept martyrdom due to their religious beliefs they chose them even knowing it implies prison suffering even death, over freedom.

There are other very devoted people that have take it to the harder level of believing that if they Martyr themselves they will be forgiven and reach heaven and they will also help others if they offer themselves for the salvation of humanity. Would not call it a pathology but ignorance and confusion.
