I was actually my theory, but mine leans more toward Shikamaru knows his memories are being altered because of the fact that everyone now believes Kawaki is Naruto son, and not Boruto. given the fact that there’s very little resemblance between Naruto and Kawaii, I think Shikamaru realizes that something has changed and if that’s the case, then Naruto is most likely still alive

Himawari said she has a “feeling” naruto is still alive. as naruto told kawaki chakra is a binding force that connects people. Its pretty obvious to me that shikamaru sai probably a few other still feel the connection to naruto and that may be part of why in the latest chapter sai and shikamaru arent shocked that amado is aware of the shinjutsu. They may have been trying to protect sarada this whole time while keeping their own doubts hidden from kawaki and ada.

I still don’t get why they didn’t just go back to Kakashi, maybe they just did t want to regress back a generation and keep it to the most recent generation prior to the current one, but we’ve never seen an active hokage Kakashi aside from in the last and his own novel, why can’t we see an active duty kakshi in the manga for a decent while
