Napoleon: “Italy is like a boot, you can only enter it from the top.”

Allies: “Hold our cigarettes…”

So surreal watching this. My nanna when she was a girl in Malta remembers the Americans massing for this invasion and her cultural shock of seeing an "African American" soldier.

My great-grandfather was in the Italian Navy during the war (they even gave him a medal for surviving a sinking), he was not in Sicily but was stationed at the naval base of Taranto and when the English invaded he was taken prisoner, but luckily the surrender agreement between the Allies and the Marshal Badoglio prevented him from being taken into captivity in England, instead he and his men were put to guard a fuel depot that the English had built in the port of Taranto.

My other great grandfather (who was about 21 years old at the time) however was stationed in Greece in a coastal artillery unit. But after 8 September 1943, his commander ordered my great-grandfather and his comrades to escape and he first went up the Balkans, then crossed the Alps and crossed the entire Republic of Salò, finally reaching Naples (from where in the meantime the Germans had retreated) and he was reunited with his family. And as far as I'm concerned he made the right choice, after all he was still young and this was no longer his war.

Some of my relatives were in the American infantry when they took Sicily and four weeks before they saved any sweets that came in their ration packs so when they got to the people of Sicily as they were liberating the island, they handed out small packages of sugar, candy, canned desserts from the ration packs anything thatthey thought the locals would appreciate and of course they did appreciate it

My great uncle died to a bomb in Sicily, I cannot express how much respect I have for him. Rest in peace to all that died in the war🫡

My grandad was there (British). Moved on to South Italy after this and fell in love with a civilian (my grandmother).

0:52 funny detail or oversight here, as soon as winston churchill says "unconditional surrender" an italian army in the north surrenders

A Crazy Fact of History: Rome originally spent over *FIFTY YEARS* in a back-and-forth conflict with local Sicilians and the Carthaginians over the island before finally conquering Sicily. The Allies took the same territory in just under 40 days.

The problem in Sicily was that many axis forces could get back to Italy bia the strait. 0:50

This happened because of USA general Patton🇺🇲 rivalry against Brittish general Montgomery🇬🇧.

They viewed Sicily more as a race to capture the important cities instead of securing the island and trap as many axis armies as they could.

Finally, this problem lead, I'm sure, to a harder advance in Italy with the Axis reinforcing their defensive lines: Gothic and Gustav

Liddle Hart observed that Kesserling was really happy that the Allied never tried to trap the Axis' troops in Sicily. Because he did not have enough soldiers to defend the Calabria.

My grandpa remembers it as well, how the America's rolled in and said: ‘hey boy, do you want some chocolate’. He’s still talking about it to this day.

This reminds when I didn’t know how to play HOI4, just carelessly wasting millions of men trying to take Sicily as Germany, lol
