“There’s no getting through to someone who has the information to know better, but lacks the inclination to do better.”
Amazingly put.

“Go with Grace, sis…”
*Grace slaps her*

Zora Neale Hurston was an anthropologist. She ensured that the lives and experiences she conveyed, in much of her writings, were as authentic to those who shared them with her, or as she observed them, as they could possibly be. Sis, needs to stand down. She is “a slave ship in shoes” personified.

The colonized traitors are same as the colonizers! She didn’t have to do this— 🙄

From someone that isn't even slightly coloured in the skin, but has lived around Gullah/geechee folk my whole life, they aren't any less educated than anyone else, it's just the way they speak. Think of it as an accent from a foreign place, you might not understand it, but their people do, and that's called culture

Every language is valuable, and every day we lose another one is a depressing day.

No one speaks badly-- they speak their own dialect perfectly well.

Thanks! Shout out to the Zora Neale Hurston Festival and Museum. This girl's sentiment is common in Fl and Central Fl, but we should remember Eatonville, FL.
At one point, we didn't want dem folks to know what we were saying. I still don't, but I get and appreciate Sunn m'Cheaux 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

Holy moly, that was an awesome move, using her video to educate her.

Vernacular usage does not imply lack of intelligence. Its a specific choice for a particular audience in writing. As an aside, your hair looks awesome.

I never had trouble understanding Zora Neale Hurston's words when I read them because the vernacular was very similar to my very southern grandpa. My family is white, but the dialects are very similar. It's interesting to think about how language developed through the years and what influences there are on dialects.

Imagine being intentionally obtuse about intentional use of a particular vernacular and how difficult it is to maintain that consistently throughout a novel

Exactly. One of the smartest women I ever knew was so under-educated I couldn't read her grocery lists when I shopped for her; she had several serious health issues, but she could out-think her doctors and had the best lawn and garden on the block.
