Fly Tying Book Review - Trout Flies (Dave Hughes, 1999)

Dave Hughes' "Trout Flies, The Tier's Reference" could easily be considered one of the seminal works on trout fly tying published in the last 50 years. At 470 pages, the book covers every type of fly the trout fly fisherman might be interested in.

Originally published in 1999, the book can still be found (new or used) at many of your fly shops or various places online. While still a bit pricey, if you can find a nice quality used copy out there, I think it's well worth the investment.

Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading three new tying videos a week, with the occasional extra video on other days.

I bought this book as a beginner in 2003 as my first real investment in fly tying, and I'm so glad I did. (I also found it discounted at Barnes & Nobles back then, so lucky me.) I don't often reference it anymore, but it was well worth the price at the time. I did find it helpful as a beginner, but that was also pre-youtube. I'm not sure if anyone needs books like these anymore, but I sure like having them.
