How to use Lightroom Masking in 60 Seconds

If you want to improve your photography, you absolutely must understand how to use Lightroom Classic's masking tools. Masking, or local adjustments, allows you to selectively edit certain parts of your image. This is one of the easiest ways to shape light in your image, bring attention to your subject, make selective color adjustments, and more.

Luckily, the masking tools are pretty easy to use once you understand how a mask works. Remember that regardless of how the mask is made, anything black on the mask will not have any adjustment applied, while anything white will have total adjustment applied. Anything in between will have a partial adjustment.

Once you understand that, it all comes down to learning how to make masks work for you. There are many ways to make a mask, but my favorite is using gradient tools, which are second to none when shaping light. All the masking options have a time and place, so you should experiment with them to master masking in Lightroom Classic.

Once you understand the basics of masking, you can experiment with combining different masks to make more refined masks. This is an advanced concept, but it will help you make even more refined selections by combining multiple masks to make one super-refined mask.

I’ve seen people have the mask in a red color and still be able to see the image. Is there a keybind for this or is it a setting?
