Sketching with different inks. Street scene from Lisbon. Quick drawing techniques. Peter Sheeler

I like the idea of using soluble inks when urban-sketching. Unfortunately the soluble inks can lose their crisp and clean lines.

In this simple demonstration I mix waterproof and non-waterproof inks to achieve that look I'm trying to capture.

MATERIALS:

PAPER: Size- 5"x7"
Arches 140lb Hot Press Paper for this Video.

My papers of choice include Arches 140lb Hot press and Cold press paper and Strathmore 500 series Sketchbooks. All are 100% cotton rag.
For beginners, I recommend starting with a high quality paper and experimenting with different types. As your style develops, you'll get a feel for which type is best. Waiting to switch to a better quality paper later will be much like learning to paint all over again.

MY PALETTE: All tube paints!
Winsor Newton- Yellow Ochre, Sepia, Burnt Sienna, Sap Green.
DaVinci - Phthalo Blue, Quinachridone Fuchsia.

My Paint Palette is simply the tray from a package of gum. It is attached with two sided tape to a clamp. The mixing tray is the packaging from a suitcase travel lock. Ingenuity when away from home.

PEN: A Pigma Micron pen, 02 nib.
A TWSBI ECO Fountain Pen with Extra Fine Nib. This is a piston fill type of pen that holds a huge quantity of ink.

INK: Manuscript Black Fountain Pen ink. I purchased this ink here in Lisbon because it was readily available. I don't know anything about it's archival properties.

I normally don't like sketches with non-waterproof ink since they look sloppy to me. But this sketch is outstanding! I love how you used the waterproof ink to lay down a stable base and really appreciated how you used the electric wires to tone the sky.
