Bogoróditse Djévo - Arvo Pärt (Josh Turner Cover)

“Bogoróditse Djévo” by Arvo Pärt cover from Josh Turner Guitar

I first encountered this piece on the King's Singers' superb 2005 album "Christmas," and later found out that despite the text not being strictly Christmas-y (it's an excerpt from the Ave Maria) it was written as a commission for the famous Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at King's College on Christmas Eve in 1990.

This is my first attempt at singing in Russian - I hope it's not a complete disaster.

Dear Josh. You are the perfect example for a musician for whom limits of style don't matter. Only the music itself matters and your borderline seems only to be between good and bad, nowhere else. An artful guitar-accompniment with Bach's advanced harmonies, a Chopin Nocturne or as here a vocal Arvo Pärt, and on the other side "Mamma Mia" (one of my absolute favorits- prefered to the original) or some Country stuff, but always performed with Your ease, excellence and all Your wonderful musicality. Could listen to You endlessly. Thankyou very, very much for enriching our world. - Greetings from Jochen (Germany).

Wow, great! As a Russian speaker l’d say it is cool to have a musical ear! As far as this part is not even in contemporary russian, it’s in ancient Slavic used for russian orthodox church services - you’ve done it almost perfect!!!

Sounds awesome. I like how his eye brows tell you what note he is singing.

My hat is definitely off to your parents for putting up with 8 of you. That’s quite a vocal experience for sure. I’m impressed with your range. That was really quite fantastic.👍👍🇨🇦

It takes more than just a good ear to accomplish what Josh has done here, it takes a very good ear to stay in tune to sing these close harmonies over several registers. Well done and soulful as well. The breadth and depth of his musicality is likely unequaled.

Is there no limit to Josh’s talent? As an Arvo Pärt fan, this was an absolute blast. Brilliant, Josh, just brilliant.

I am never left un-amazed by this guy's stuff.
I'm gonna be pissed if I don't live long enough to see his name on a few trophies.

"I'm bored today. I may as well learn that ancient slavic I've been meaning to get to and then post a solo 8-piece harmony, ranging from bass to falsetto, vid of a Christmas chorale. I'll get back to being one of the best musicians on the planet tomorrow"

I had to listen to it twice just to make sure I heard what I thought I heard. BEST thing that ever happened to Josh, (& therefore us too) was his folks asking him if he couldn't find something better to do than that game-boy stuff! I'm so GLAD he did! I wonder if Josh ever surprises himself with his talent? FAR OUT! KUDOS Josh!

If more of the Christmas music in stores and on the radio were like this, I wouldn't mind Christmas music starting before Thanksgiving. Thank you! Just beautiful.
