This is often a misunderstood topic and even I sometimes get confused. I've often wondered what the true meaning was and I feel you've given a great explanation Robert.

One lingering question: what happens if a staccato is called for in a section of music where the sustain pedal is also being used? Does that ever happen? Or would you revert to finger pedaling at that point? Somehow I always find a way to remain confused about staccato!

I love the opening chord sequence - it reminded me a bit of a blues version of "Amazing Grace" - which, now that I've just said that, I'd love to hear you play -- a blues version of "Amazing Grace" - someday, perhaps ... :-)
I very much enjoyed your presentation.

Staccato doesn't “only” mean short, but mean~playing a note sounds shorten it's full value and detach.

Interesting and I can see it being misunderstood though. So you are just lengthening the half note a little more than a quarter but not quite. Maybe like a dotted quarter then? And the quarters played more like an eighth?

How can a staccato be detached if it's at the end of slur?

please show the music you are playing. You are describing, but without the visual it is hard to follow along. Especially those who do not play classical pieces.

Typical musical training confuses stacatto for staccatisimo.

staccato means plucked, i thought. like guitar strings :)

so the finger barely touches the key, i.e. strikes it and immediately lets go again. super short sound.

Seems he’s the only one who thinks this.
