My dad said some of the “advice” in the USA was just to make it easier to find the bodies.

Honestly the luckiest people in this scenario would be those who die instantly and wouldn't have to deal with the aftermath

"Scared of the nukes, eh? Heh we're good here I painted my windows *white* "

Painting the windows white was proven to actually reflect back some of the heat, problem was that the rest of your house was on fire moments before the blastwave came along and ripped you to pieces in 500 MPH winds. At further distances out where you had high heat but not enough to instantly burn skin, fat, and wood it performed better and would result in slight scorching.

Either way you're not going to be checking windows after a bomb goes off, unless you're in When the Wind Blows...

Pleeeeaaaaseee make a video expanding on these topics! I am fascinated by PSA sort of situations and this counts!

this is like the good old "use an umbrella to protect yourself from a falling anvil" Wile E. Coyote tactic

It was to avoid panic and despair. They knew the government bunkers were viable, ordinary people were the cannon fodder. If we have our own inadequate shelters, we won't try to breach theirs.

I collect these pamphlets and books. They are so fascinating, especially when they reference things that were planned but never ended up being built. Like the Strategic Defense Initiative (the "Star Wars Program") that was supposed to be a whole network in space capable of shooting down nukes. So there's lit from the US that says "Until this is built, here's how to prepare" but obviously it was never built so... good luck I guess? It's all just so interesting to me. I'd definitely watch a longer form video on this kind of stuff.

Could you do an expanded version of this video? Here in the USA, our government published similar pamphlets back in the late 50s and early 60s.

Used to own a _Protect and Survive_ shirt. Nobody got it.

Also even at the time people knew this was bullshit. Just watch the episode of the The Young Ones "Bomb" where a character paints himself white and hides under a table.

As a teen of the 80’s, I know a lot of the nuclear “survival information” was just to make people feel as if they could do SOMETHING! We were taught in school to “duck and cover”, as if curling into a ball with a jacket over your head was going to save your life. But it helped people deal with the hopelessness that a lot of people felt during that time.

It was cool being a kid in the 80's

This should be a bigger topic, maybe go into the history of nuclear war movies made at this time, in particular, comparing "Threads" to "The Day After". It's generally considered that Threads was the more harrowing and more realistic movie despite only having a £400, 000 budget.

Reminds me of grade school in the early 80s. We had nuclear attack drills where we would sit against a wall with our heads between our knees.

When I was a child, I found a pamphlet with instructions for building a fallout shelter in the basement. And I remembering wondering about all those black and yellow signs on department stores and office buildings. (This would have been in the years following the Cuban Missile Crisis.)

One older building in downtown Philadelphia had a sign at the basement steps pointing to the Air Raid Shelter.

"Where the Wind Blows", book and cartoon, single handedly demolished the idiocy of Protect and Survive.
Well worth a watch.

Ugh the drawing of that shelter gave me immediate flashbacks to "When the wind blows" and the horrible ache in my heart attached to that memory. Oh god, so much sadness... 😭

Was obsessed with this after watching 'When the Wind Blows'. I have never seen the pamphlet but the PSAs are wild. With what we know now this is all pointless. I think in every country even government officials were not told the whole truth about what a A-bomb attack would be like so a lot of people high up in government believed this and in the US duck and cover would help.

Not all bad, those caught outside had the handy option of hiding behind the leaflet.
