People don’t give Mei enough credit she single handedly created the best and most peaceful era for the mist village and turned up connections with the other villages to ensure peace for her people, she might not be the strongest kage but she definitely was the best one when it came down to the safety and and public relationships for her village

And almost all hokage have some kind of direct bond with atleast one previous hokage.
Tobirama was hashirama's brother, they both trained hiruzen.
Hiruzen trained jiriaya and tsunade, hashirama's granddaughter.
Minato's mentor was jiraiya, also minato and kushina entrusted naruto to hiruzen (which was a bad idea).
Tsunade is related by blood to 2 previous hokage, student of the third and probably personally knew the 4th since her teammate trained him.
Kakashi was minato's student, served as an anbu under both minato and hiruzen and was trusted by tsunade.
Naruto is the son of the 4th, saw the 3rd as his gramps, the 5th as his granny and kakashi was his first sensei. As an uzumaki he is also distantly related to the senju-clan. And then there is also the connection through kurama who saw all the hokage in action, either directly or through the eyes of his jinchuriki.

Mei is so underrated! She's one of the few people who can block Madara's Majestic Flame; it took several shinobis to even block one. Plus, she opened the mist to the rest of the world, hence the allied shinobi :)
