In the first half of the 20th century Texas gave the the United States Sam Rayburn and LBJ. During the second half it gave itself Jim Hightower and Ann Richards. Come the 21st century it gives the country George W. Bush and Ted Cruz.

A few years ago Thomas Frank wrote a good polemic, "What's the Matter with Kansas?" Somebody ought to write another: "What Happened to Texas?"
