Designing 4 NEW pets for our game! | Pixel Art & Animation

Time to expand the pet roster in Petal Runner, and I’ve got some new ideas about what direction these can take! Along the way I share my design process, from rough sketches into the final animated pixel art sprites.

I can't believe you pulled off the orb rotation animation on that last pet with only 3 frames. That takes some real third-dimensional thinking. Great work!

The different emotes and using the orbs to give them a little bow when they wave is brilliant please keep the utensils you are cooking 🔥🔥🔥

Panda could also be really big. Kinda like Snorlax (if that's not stealing too much). I love the legs.
Nebula's idle animation is fun, because you can't tell if it's rotating clockwise or anti-clockwise.
the rotating orbs for the "Otherworldly Celestial" are incredible!!
One thing I might want to add is, that maybe it'd be a good idea to also test the designs with some background colors and patterns. it looks good on the CRT previews, but maybe it's still a good idea to test them so you don't run into design issues because of the color palettes :)

If you're using "hana" as "flower" (like the japanese 花) - the "ha" is pronounced like "haha" not the name "hannah".

Really feeling like nebula's forehead star should lag behind on the bobbing animation to further suggest his maliability!

Perfect timing: my current project is about trying my hand at monster/pet spriting so this should be interesting insight.

Edit: Well. Not much *new* insights as much as a very good refresher instead. Great use of variation on baseline animations to mantain a coherent feel and yet give every pet a different personality. Definitely something to keep in mind.

These are wonderful additions; really enjoyed seeing how the pets came together, all the way from the sketchbook concepts! The celestial being has an especially creative design centered around those orbs. They seem really versatile! 😁

I really like the style of the Thumbnail. Its a simple deviation of your usual but its nice addition.

Beautiful! It may be because I am working on a slightly larger scale but I keep wanting to make those simple 2 black pixel eyes on one of my characters and I keep making them bigger and more complex instead haha!

Awesome video Brandon! I love the orb idea for the Celestial - Super Creative! I can't wait for the game to come out. Also, how in the world were you able to make such a great palette? It works SO well for the game. A four color blend should NOT be that smooth. Inspiring video, as always. 😊
