It’s the most saddest yet fascinating relationship a bird can build with a human. I love birds to much, I think sometimes people fail to realize the reality that you presented in your video.

Not sure I’ve EVER agreed with a post more. They are affectionate- but that is a mere FRACTION of their personality. AND if you are affectionate and set the bar, they have an expectation. If that expectation isn’t met, they act out. It’s a non stop job for 12 hours a day. They need constant supervision and in my opinion, can be very hard to read, especially during hormone season. The volume is high. Very high. They have amazing personalities- but they are toddlers with add. When you go into a bird store and hold one it’s instant love. DONT BE FOOLED.

You want one? Babysit one for one week. Then make your decision.
Great post

You know, this is great for me because once upon a long time ago, i worked at a dingy reptile shop that had a few birds. Two african greys, one scarlet macaw, and two umbrella cockatoos. One of which was named Tenguin. And tenguin, like all of the other birds there, was very neglected. He spent 97% of his time inside his dirty, empty, bird cage. He maybe had one toy in there at a time. Consequently, he was a very energetically frustrated bird that would constantly scream for attention because human interaction was the only time he got to do anything with all that energy. Peekaboo, singing songs, trading phrases, playing tag, getting treats, etc. Poor little guy all around. They all were, but i he took it the hardest. And his scream. Good god, his scream was so loud that it could be heard from the inside of the co-op, across a parking lot, and through the shut windows and doors of our building. It was so frequent, all the co op staff knew his name and could accurately identify him from inside their building solely by how loud his caw screetch was. I was 18 years old when i worked there. I spent a lot of time with tenguin trying to help entertain him because i didn't know what else i could do, he wasn't my bird and i knew nothing about birds. He ended up bonding with me during my time there. Well, the shop wasn't in a great financial situation in general, they had too many reptiles. So when covid hit they went under. I go back to visit a little before that finalizes, I'm 20ish right about then and next thing i know is I'm being sales pitch'd to buy Tenguin. 3k and I can have him and his gross ass cage! What a deal. Nevermind the fact that I was living in a rental room, had no space or knowlege about how to realistically care for birds. I almost considered buying him just to have the opportunity to give him to an avian rescue i knew of through my own exotics contacts. But 3k i didn't have to rehome a bird? That was the cruddy part. It sucks because i did genuinely love that bird, and in waaay different circumstances i might have took him on and figured it out as i went just to get him out of there, but honestly, just no. I don't know where he is now, and that sucks. I hope he finally found his way into better hands. But I dodged a BULLET.

One of my neighbors have an umbrella cockatoo. Some days they leave him outside on the porch and he will sit there and scream all day. Don't ever let him see you looking at him or he'll get a newfound vigor for screaming. I still think they're cool birds, I just think maybe those neighbors shouldn't have one.

My umbrella came to me when her owner died. She immediately loved me. She won’t let anyone near me but adores me and cuddles with me every chance she gets. Just a month ago, after owning her with no issues at all for 6 months, every time I return her to her cage after time with me, she now bites me. I don’t mean a little bite, I mean chunks of skin and over excitement about it!

I own 17 other species of parrots, all rescues. Can you help me with what went wrong all of a sudden?!?

I had a cockatoo that was biting everyone. How do I train my cockatoo?

Omg!! You're scaring me... we just bought a caique 3 weeks ago and we can't keep our hands off of him... please give me words of wisdom on this. Are they like cockatoos? Are we ruining our bird? I've waited years for a parrot and I'm just very very excited.
