Thank you to Factor for sponsoring today. I turned off ALL other YouTube ads for this one due to the sensitive nature of the topic, so you won't get mid-rolls or anything xoxo

Watching this reminds me of when I was inpatient I was complaining about a guy I went to school with who would always show off his self-harm, but the counselor told me something that I still think about: "If he's willing to hurt himself for attention, something is wrong with him, maybe not what he claims, but at the end of the day he's still self-harming."

There's a huge difference between someone lying about having cancer for clout/money and someone mutilating their legs to the point they needed to be amputated. I hope Kelly got the help she needed and that she's living her best life, wherever she is.

I looked at the photos and deterioration of her legs. This broke my heart so much that she did ballet and her mental health deteriorated so damn much that she mutilated her legs to the point that they needed to be amputated. I’m disabled and idk how people can watch this and call her an attention whore and such. She was clearly extremely sick whether it’s physical or mental. No sane person would do this to themselves for “attention”

doctors will do skin grafts and blood transfusions but not deal with the real issue of mental illness. This whole situation is weird.

I’ve seen many shock sites and the photos of kelly’s legs were some of the worst and most uncomfortable photos I’ve seen online. I can’t believe how far munchausen’s can go. This was not somebody simply trying to get attention on the internet, this was somebody who was incredibly mentally ill. This story is so sad.

I don’t know what scared me more, the fact that she was SH all along or the fact that her physicians, family, those around her watched her spiral to the point where her legs had to be amputated. She was obviously a danger to herself on multiple levels. She literally had to get skin graphs and no one thought that she might pick them too? So many people dropped the ball on this. It’s just haunting.

The criticisms remind me of the way people talk about drug addicts, as if they just woke up one day and decided to get addicted to heroin. It's not like Kelly just pulled a nerve out of her leg for funsies. Disturbing that a person can be this obviously unwell and people will still act like they're just being a brat.

I hate how social media make people censor words like it’s the dark ages.

This is fascinating. I've never heard of Kelly. I have received blood transfusions every two weeks for almost all my life, I've had a port for 9 years. I was diagnosed with Congenital Erythropoietic Porphyria. I've had many, many blisters and scars and scabs over my 37 years alive! I don't have any ill feelings towards Kelly, I feel incredibly sorry for her having lived with this mental illness. I've had my fair share of bullies on and offline my entire life. I can't imagine forums and forums of people discussing my life, but if it happened I would feel sorry for them too. Clearly they're lacking something in their humanity (empathy?). Love your videos, Hannah, thank you!

Regarding the fecal matter being found in her leg wounds: I have been battling a HUGE (12”x8”) ulcerated wound on the interior of my lower right leg for nearly 3 years now. I used to change my bandages in the bathroom bc of the tile floors (easy to clean up after washing off wound) and it’s typically the cleanest (least cluttered) area of our tiny apartment. Since it’s a bathroom though, there is always usually fecal matter left over from the toilet being used and flushed (especially if you don’t close the lid before flushing!) and I hypothesize that she was picking her wounds and possibly cutting in the bathroom. She wouldn’t need to smear feces into her wound directly to get infected. I only know because it definitely happened to me. They also found bacteria that usually only shows up in our mouths in my wound at one time too, and I clearly wasn’t LICKING my open wound 😂

I totally agree with you- Kelly wasn't simply faking an illness for attention, she clearly did have a severe mental illness, and it obviously went untreated. No one who's just looking for attention online would harm themselves to that extent- particularly picking through her skin grafts. That's extremity that absolutely no one of sound mind would resort to. Kelly did need sympathy and treatment, just not for the physical ailment she was manifesting. I hope she did eventually get the mental health help she needs- the optimist in me thinks her going quiet on social media is a good thing as it might be a sign that she did get into treatment and part of that was ending her social media presence.

Reminds me a little bit of Michelle Carters case. Obviously their actions as a result of their mental illness are indefensible, but people need to realize that they were suffering from extreme mental illness and weren't of sound mind. They weren't just shallow girls looking for attention online for kicks.

what i like about this channel is that it's indeed about horror and creepy, but in a calm way
there's no pretending or dark atmosphere
it's different from other creepy channels I follow

My little sister fakes illnesses, tragic events and etc because she has some undiagnosed mental issues and trouble with addiction. She currently is pretending to be 25 weeks pregnant, actually. Everyone knows she's lying, but she continues to keep it up for whatever reason. It's heartbreaking to see people live like this. But a lot of people, such as my sister, refuse to get help for the things that are actually wrong even though they'll rack up thousands in medical bills to treat pretend illnesses. It makes no sense and is honestly rage inducing to watch a loved one go through this.

The fact that someone lost their legs and the internet still says to this day that they were faking everything and there was nothing wrong with them is utterly shocking and disgusting. A dancer lost their legs because they couldn't stop hurting themselves. People thought it was entertaining. I'm disgusted.

Even Doctors will call you crazy if they cannot pinpoint your sickness; it happened to me and it’s the scariest thing in the world. Where do you go when the doctors don’t even believe you!?!? After years of calling me crazy, they finally performed the proper tests: which showed my entire digestive system was paralyzed 😢 I went down to 80 pounds before ! They still treated me bad but at least I had a diagnosis. I finally found a doctor to treat me and life is still tough, but it’s a relief to know!

Hi Hannah, medical student here. First thing I have to comment on, I have never, in my life, heard of testing a wound for the presence of fecal matter. My guess is that the wounds and/or discharge were swabbed to see what bacteria would grow out. It's common practice when wounds fail to heal and get infectd. They also will run tests to determine which antibiotics would be the most effective.

What may happen is they find species of bacteria that, normally, are found in the GI tract like Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. Although, that doesn't mean a whole lot. If I told you what's crawling around on your phone, you'd never touch it again.

Thank you for touching on the prevalence of keybord clinicians. As both a future provider and someone who deals with an invisible chronic illness, it drives me nuts, especially when terms get tossed around to the point that it loses its meaning. One can make educated guesses, but it should not be treated like a definitive diagnosis. This case is heartbreaking. The lengths some people with fictitious disorder will go through is astounding.

I’ve known of Kelly’s story for some time now, and always felt so much pain and empathy for her. The torment people put her through when she was so clearly mentally ill is so devastating. I have OCD, and dermatillomania, where I compulsively pick at my skin, scabs, ingrown hairs, etc, and will for hours on end, up until I can’t anymore because the contortions I end up in to reach certain areas leave me in so much pain. Ever since hearing the extent of what happened to Kelly, and also giving myself unintentional infections from compulsively picking wounds, I fear a future where I will end up giving myself and or doing to myself something I cannot come back from. My heart breaks for Kelly and what she’s gone through.

13:45 People also have this same attitude about drug addicts. Like "they do it to themselves so why do they deserve medical care"

She should have been in a psychiatric facility. She mutilated her own limbs to the point they had to be removed. That’s severe mental incapacitation. If she was held in hospital before it got to this point, she wouldn’t be using blood or resources that can make a situation life or death. She didn’t need THOSEresources, she needed to be psychiatrically hospitalized.
