How To Find Great Swimwear For Your Body Type | How to Style

Let's be honest - shopping for swimwear can be really stressful

I don't know many people - regardless of their body shape and size that don't find it tricky. I've just been through this process because I'm heading off to Bali next month so I thought it was a perfect time to talk swimwear.

1. Get your head in the game - before you even head out the door - or go online to start shopping you need to get your head in the game. What I mean by this is that you need a bit of a reality check. It's one thing looking at images of bikini clad babes but if you go in expecting to look like that you're setting yourself up to be disappointed. So managing your expectations is really important.

2. Give yourself a fighting chance - it's easy to be quickly defeated and want to throw in the towel and give up but to get it right requires some time. You may try swimsuits on at one particular store and find nothing that works for you and somewhere else will be a completely different experience. Give yourself plenty of time - you can't be in a rush

3. Fashion doesn't matter - fashion doesn't factor at all when it comes to swimwear. If a particular style is in fashion but it has never suited you then don't set yourself up to fail by expecting that it may just work. If you're not comfortable and feeling confident in what you're wearing, it doesn't matter how fashion forward it is - you're never going to wear it.

4. Embrace Separates - if you're having a hard time with matching tops and bottoms then go for separates. You don't have to put things together because a store tells you too. It's better to find pieces that fit well instead of getting hung up on everything needing to match.

5. Don't be scared to be different - you may want to wear a string bikini but if you don't feel great in it then what's the point? Maybe a rash top and and some board shorts will make you feel more comfortable. Maybe a tankini will make you feel less self conscious of your mid-riff. Remember it's about what works for you and not what everyone else is wearing . Being different is fine.

6. Size doesn't matter - swimsuits are typically smaller than clothes because they're meant to fit snugly. So you may want to go up a size or two when you're trying them on. So forget what the number on the tag says - it's really not important.

7. Remember more isn't always more with swimwear. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that more fabric will be more flattering. Extra fabric can actually emphasize the things you want to hide. So don't assume that more fabric will be more flattering. If your swimsuit is too large the fabric will gape and not support you properly. If you want more coverage chose a style that offers more coverage not just a larger size.

8. Don't skimp. Be warned about saving money on swimwear - in my experience the fit and quality just isn't there and they really stretch out of shape quickly too.

9. Ties are your friend - swimwear with adjustable straps help to give you the perfect fit.

10. Remember great style begins with a great fit - so it's more important to find the silhouette that best flatters your figure

Style Tips: Large bust
Support is key. Opt for suits with underwire or molded cups to give you enough support. And be sure to avoid ruffles or embellishments up top if you're hoping to minimize the focus on your chest.
Bra-style tops with an underwire and adjustable straps provide the best support. The thicker the strap the more support

One piece with a higher back is also good for giving good support and moulded cups are great for support too. Opt for suits that are sized like your regular bra because they're constructed to support a larger bust.

Small bust

For a smaller bust you want to look for styles with more minimal coverage or embellished detailing, bows, and patterns to create the illusion of a larger chest. Triangle tops create the illusion of curves, as do tops with bold prints or embellishments with ruffles. Bra tops and padded push-up tops offer extra lift and can create cleavage, as can certain halter tops. A smaller bust always means you can wear tiny scoop tops or bandeaus - embrace them!

Tummy Concealing
Whether you prefer to be covered up or you're out to slim your middle, there are a number of one-piece and two-piece suits, like high-waisted or tankini styles, that help to smooth out your middle.

Tips and tricks:
Shirring works miracles. The gathered fabric hides bulges and creates definition in the waist.

If you carry your weight in the lower part of your belly, try on a retro-inspired, high-waisted suit. They're on trend and ace for covering the abdomen

Love this, but still feel that surely the best tip is disregard what size you think you are (in clothes etc) and try things on (bikinis and swimwear) properly to make sure they fit properly and are "fit for purpose" if you are actually wanting to swim in the ocean etc. Those tie side string bikinis - bottoms want to fall down/move on me, and tops can ride up on small busts in the waves (learned that one the hard way!). I was also trying to squeeze my bum into bikinis that matched my pant size, but discovered I typically need to go up a size to get a flattering fit across my booty.
