Thanks so much for this tutorial! However, I feel like I need to point out something that wasn’t mentioned, because this could help newcomers on the hardmodding scene:
After TSOP’ing the Xbox, it would stay on a black screen after booting up with no disc, but when the Hexen disc was in it booted just fine. This is because having a softmod on a hardmodded xbox cause issues with loading the dashboard, so if you have this problem boot up your Hexen disc (I’m using the TruHexen 2021 edition) & be sure to use the “remove the softmod files” option! Don’t worry if it says you won’t be able to boot the disc anymore, it still works fine for me!

Also, I don’t know if it’s just me, but installing UnleashX as my main dashboard made the Xbox unable to go past the boot screen, I’ve tried XBMC & XBMC4Gamers though and it worked just fine. Haven’t tried the Emustation one as it’s not my preference.

Ran into a bit of a gotcha on my end, but resolved it! If you're flashing a Winbond chip - be sure to use a legitimate Xbox controller! As soon as Gentoox would load up I could not control my console at all and it would default to CD/DVD. After several tries I dug around for an original, legit controller and was able to flash on the first go!

I know this is 4 years old but this is the most thorough tutorial I've run across, I used this to TSOP flash an original soft modded xbox. I will point out someone suggested using conductive paint to bridge the pads of my v1.4 Xbox. I applied it with a toothpick and it worked like a charm on the first application. (My 2 soldering try's failed miserably, lack of skill on my part).

I use wire glue to connect the points, it's risk free and traces can be wiped away when finished to relock the tsop which is handy when modding for friends etc, for the extra sharp wire I make an L shape with electric tape right next to the points and draw the trace using the glue (although sharp tsops are rare)

thank you so so much i love your videos and you finally help me with my xbox's ive had 4 ones hard drive died before modding (1.6) and the rest died because of crappy chinese mod chip clones which killed the other 2 1.6 xboxs, but then my dad found a xbox at a thrift store for $20 and i checked the date and it said 2002 so i took it home but the gamble was worth it and it turned out to be 1.0 xbox. you really need more subs and likes you deserve it! :)

You said that use F and G partiotions if large HDD, only F if original. I have softmodded 320GB with only F and all space is available. Do you know what max space is preferable for one partition - 500GB ? 1TB or 2TB ?

In 3:01 as you said recommending to remove the wire after TSOP does you mean cut it or remove it and remove the soldering

I've never soldered before but, is the idea of doing this like blobbing some solder between the two points then they're bridged? Gunna try this soon

great tutorial, about to do first tsop on my 1.0, but I have a question, the non windbond 1.0-1.5 bios you recommended, you said its for evox, what if you're planning on using unleash x? what do you recommend?

What if you chose the just flash e option because you were currently using the 10gb hard drive but you are going for a hdd upgrade later?

Thank you for this tutorial. Its really worth it to do this mod in order to preserve the original system and allow it to be playable for the years down the road.
In terms of hardware revisions though, which revision would you say is the best in terms of component quality and long term play ability?
( I tried out a 1.2 and its video output was noticeably darker than the 1.1 that I own. They're both using the same video encoder chip ).

Great video mate, Just 3 questions about this.

First - I need to buy my first soldering iron, Would I be fine with a 60 watt adjustable temperature solder iron?

Second - What is the wire called you use for the sharp flash ? (2:49 in the video) and does it have to be a certain thickness?

Ran into a minor glitch. While flashing a winbond I had it hooked to my hdtv via component cables. It would glitch out when it came time to select the penguin because that menu is apparently 240p and it won’t recognize 240p over components. So I had to fish out an old set of composite cables to actually run the winbond install.

HELP!!! I get to the Gentoox Loader screen @ 5:06, and I try to use my Dpad right, to move the menu across to the Advanced at the right hand side, but I cannot for the life of me get this to move. Its like its frozen. And after 5 seconds it loads some kind of linux based os, and I have to power down the system. I have tried this 3 times now with no joy. I am using a shitty aftermarket pad but the dpad does work as I have verified this. Xbox is already softmodded with 160gb hdd. Any ideas? My version is 1.3 Winbond bios chip
