BMW 335i High Pressure Fuel Pump Failure

Here is a video of the infamous BMW 335i N54 High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) failure. The car will go into limp mode and you will see the "half engine" (power reduced) light and the exhaust sounds like it is "putting" like an old 2 stroke. It didn't occur in this video, but the fan sometimes starts to spin at full speed.

YEP. That's exactly it. The HPFP.

Just took mine in for a diagnostic.

HERE IS THE QUICK FIX >

Start/Stop the car until it idles a bit better. Let her idle at 2, 500-3, 000 RMP for a couple minutes and rev it a few times. This will 'warm' up the HPFP.

THEN > Turn off the car for 5 seconds after the pump has run for a bit.
When you restart the car it should be running normally.

I'm researching this more but it seems BMW has upgraded the warranty on this part for 5yr / 100, 000.

Thanks, that helped. Mine starts up fine but suddenly rpm drops to 500 before it picking up to idle. HPFP is about to go almost similar mileage 109k.

You have that long ignition crank symptom ? Did you fix it with a new fuel pump?

I have a 2011 335i and when mines went out it just went into limp mode. Your video looks like your injectors need replacing

I have the same exact symptoms ( half engine light, fan blasting, sputters when flooring the gas pedal). On 5th/6th gear I literally cannot accelerate anymore.

My fuel rail pressure operates at about 18000-20000 kPa when i reset all adaptations. Upon driving, it will suddenly limp, half engine light will come on and my rail pressure decreases to 560 kpa. It my car is a manual so upon releasing the clutch and accelerating I get crazy rough idles.

I just got myself a new hpfp, will get it replaced and do a test drive.

This vid really help me my 07 m6 was doing the same thing. And I pay the Pittsburgh stealers aka dealers only to tell me the same thing that I told them that I tested and were good. But I later tested my fuel pump and found a crimp in line plus pump was making a gurgling noise sound like drinking from a straw and the juice was almost done

Hi was the rpm fluctuations less before?? I'm having same issues different car it feels underpowered and is doing same rpm thing just not as bad.

My car struggles going 110+km/h like it sputters and jerks and shakes the whole car back and forth as if I was applying gas brake gas brake but I’m accelerating the whole time and according to my friends my brake light doesn’t kick in when it happens so something like a bad fuel pump I believe might be my issue I’m by no means a expert but would like to get some help from others I have a 07 328i coupe n52 engine 😔

I have a 07 335i Mine does the same thing but it just shuts off and when I turn it back on it’s running in limp mode any ideas with that can be also the code being thrown is P119A

I have the same problem in my 535xi. I changed the plug and ignition but the same problem when the enegine is cold. I talked with my mechanich and they sayed the injector problem i dont know??
