Barefoot Across Providence: A Tribute to Mark Baumer

I did not know Mark Baumer, but I saw myself in him; I saw a weird guy that just wanted people to treat the Earth and each other with kindness but felt helpless and unsure of what to do. From day one of his journey to walk barefoot across America, I was curious enough to follow his daily videos and felt truly inspired by his commitment and youthful spirit. Mark was far more daring around strangers than I could ever be, but his persistence on being himself and living fully made up for a few unusual quirks. You could see behind the jokes a deeply sensitive man who truly cared and was not one bit afraid. Witnessing that courage meant a lot to me.

Today, amidst freezing rain, I felt the need to walk a mile in his lack-of-shoes. It didn't take long for my feet to go from stinging pain to completely numb. To travel as far he did was truly an amazing accomplishment.

Rest in power, Mark. You were a beautiful spirit. I will not let you down.
