RPG says Role Play so an RPG is for me not defined by a leveling system it is defined by the choices you have to play a role in a game. If you only have one hero to play with and he always has the same progression. so its not a role play. If that character has different skill trees in which he needs to make a choice which way of ability is the best. then its an rpg.

I think that you guys are slightly missing the mark on this RPG conversation.

Going from the above definition ( pulled from google ) I would say that Role Playing Games are you becoming one with that character, acting and making choices in that world. These choices develop your character making them stronger and wiser. Development Studios have gone the route of experience points as an "easy way" to visualize to the player.

The "Action" Element would be the fast paced nature of what is happening to the player, displayed on screen. This could be car chases, intense sword battles or explosions for example.

Would love to hear if anyone else has this ideology.

It's more "action adventure" I think. Balders Gate and Diablo are action rpgs. There r no stats to upgrade in Monster Hunter.
