Surprisingly Clever DVD Eject Mechanism

I have seen DC and DVD players upcycled into laser engravers and 3D printers. What other devices would these mechanisms be useful for?

It’s quite overengineered, isn’t it? Why add so many moving parts instead of directly connecting the additional motor to the ejector hook? Nevertheless, it’s a very interesting mechanism. Someone definitely had fun designing this.
