I looked at an S5 and an RS4, and when I found out the chain is at the back of the engine, I don't think I've ever noped out of a car purchase so quickly in my life.

A mate of mine worked for an Australian Mercedes Dealer in used cars. His dealership have a VERY strict rule: If an Audi was the trade in on a new Benz the Audi was immediately sent out to the Auctioneers to get rid of. It wasn’t even washed. They knew what they had.

Fair play to the garage for taking that job on not being an Audi specialist... tying up a ramp and resource etc, not to mention the liability if it goes boom....

Certainly a massive job. I've watched a few YT videos of Dean of "Saving Salvage" rebuilding a few Audi engines and they are very complex. The skill, knowledge and perseverance needed to do these types of job is considerable - credit to your mechanic for sticking with it. Car looks the business now as you would expect!

If I ever bought another V8 it would be a Lexus LS430. Smooth as silk, cam belt on the front and although complex, most jobs can be done by a competent DIYer. Plus they're incredibly reliable!

As a close to retirement mechanic it never ceases to amaze how engineers with so much education dripping in degrees can design such junk. Anyone else remember when German cars were bulletproof. Know a service manager in a BMW dealership and all they deal with is new car warranty work. Now going to three shifts to deal with it all.

These companies designed these engines for 80-100k miles, they didn't care what happened after that (2 BMW's, 535 and X5, I had auto boxes failed because they were sealed for life) Putting timing chains behind the engine proves that unequivocally! Great work by that mechanic.

One hell of hard work on that car well done to your MECHANIC the man’s a genius this unfortunately when the engine and gearbox have been disturbed you never know what is lurking just ready to break or give way as long as you have the money to have the car repaired you know you will have a fantastic car it’s worth it when you end up with the perfect car ENJOY i am sure you will get many years of enjoyment from it the car looks stunning.
