US ice storm: Power outages in Texas as treacherous road conditions kill 10 across states

A winter storm moving through the U.S. south left many Texans in the dark as icy conditions brought down trees and froze equipment, leaving more than 430,000 people without power as of Thursday.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Thursday that power outages currently being experienced in parts of the state are a result of tree branches falling on power lines and that the state power grid was not impacted by the storm.

The storm, which also impacted Arkansas and Oklahoma, resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people, after ice and snow created treacherous driving conditions.

While a warming trend was expected Thursday, the city of Austin's utility company warned all power may not be restored until Friday. Even as parts of the south look forward to thawing out, officials are warning of another frigid system coming from Canada that is anticipated will move into the U.S. northeast by Friday.

Huh that’s pretty alarming but it is nice seeing people trying to have fun. Guess this goes to show that it is always a good idea to have emergency blankets and a plan for how to handle power outages in the cold

Grim memories of a deadly 2021 blackout. Governor Greg Abbott and his clown show should resign.

Put salt on your icy roads, otherwise, accidents will happen, fender bender, or more serious.

The gulf coast didn't freeze.

Just cold and wet.

Not complaining.

When asked for his assessment of the situation, Governor Abbott said "We all gotta die sometime."

Underground power lines would be the smart move with trees like that everywhere. Glad the old dude knows how to drive in ice.

The climate is changing. Some areas are warmer, some colder - the Great Lakes are barely frozen this year, the alps in Switzerland are lacking snow... do some research.
