The Dell PowerEdge R720xd server is a dual processor system. The R720xd has two LGA2011 sockets, which means that the R720xd accepts Intel Xeon E5-2600 or v2 series processors. Please note, that in order to use the v2 processors, you must have an updated BIOS. In general, it is best practice to keep everything on your system up to date, which you can learn how in our Mass Updates video. Below are some of the CPUs that we recommend for the R720xd server. This list is not a complete list of supported processors, but it consists of a few great processors within the E5-2600 and E5-2600 v2 series.

Low End CPUs
E5-2660 – 8 Core 2.2GHz
E5-2670 – 8 Core 2.6GHz
E5-2680 – 8 Core 2.7GHz

In this video, we also show you how to remove and replace your old processor. It is important to be cautious, so you do not damage the pins in the CPU socket when removing the old processor. It is also important to make sure old thermal paste doesn’t get into the socket. We will show you how to handle your CPU and perform a CPU upgrade. These step-by-step instructions are great for beginners as well as those who need a refresher.

I have an R720xd and a pair of R620s The 620's are both running Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2670 0 @ 2.60GHz' CPUs while the 720XD is showing as a Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2640 0 @ 2.50GHz. looking to max out all CPUs. When I looked at this video for the 720XD, the E5-2640 isn't even shown as an option, but the Dell factory inventory shows these as OEM for this SvcTag. Are there different versions of the Motherboard? Concerned that if I get the E5-2697v2's I'll kill something onthe motherboard. Thoughts?

I have a r720xd and bought a pair of e5-2690 v2 on eBay and realized it says that model cpu is not supported on the 3.5” r720xd. Do you know if these CPU’s can be used maybe with a bios update?
