Man am I having fun with this game. It’s the first time in a long time that all my friends have had the console that a new smash is on. It makes us all feel like kids talking about the game at work like children in the playground.

also i gotta say, things like more balanced gameplay, more fast and polished mechanics, more newcomers and detailed stages are way more important than things like break the targets in my opinion

To be fair about the old All Star mode, I felt that after getting all the dlc on Wii U it got too goddamn long. And this game has even more characters than that. I wouldn’t even think about beating that with over 70 characters.

Gotta say, I found the Street Fighter sub world in WoL to be extremely fun. Wish there was more of that.

I think the relative lack of a graphical jump was part of the reason why they felt the need to go so hard on content/fanservice and decent fighting mechanics changes, in order to make a clear impression that it wasn't just Smash 4.5 to the mainstream. Overall, Ultimate feels like the best Smash since 2001's Melee both in gameplay and boldness. Hope those 2 games have long, healthy lives for many more years. Just a shame we couldn't get 70+ new Break the Targets courses =/

The game's been out for basically two weeks so I understand the slight World of Light spoilers in the review, but many of those are a joy to find on your own.

Excellent review Damiani, best in the biz. Online was definitely a sour note, but the rest of the package is brimming with so much content and just raw *fun* that I can't be as mad about that as I would if this were another game. However, I sure as hell am NOT paying for Nintendo's online until it's worth it, and Smash is really only fun with friends that are in the room in its current state.

*Update:* I caved and I paid for online anyways :( Online is a little better with the patch but beyond 1 vs 1 which usually works fine, it's really still very problematic and laggy. 4 person free for all online is just slow motion smash bros, there's no way around it.

I love how your guys' scores are never a surprise. I usually can guess what the score will be about right before the score is shown which just shows the quality of the writing put into these reviews.

I recently compiled each of the allies personal top 10 lists from 2017 and processed them through various voting systems. BOTW won GOTY in every system so no worries. But Hellblade, What Remains of Edith Finch, Steam World Dig 2, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, which all ranked in the top 10 for this compiled list were snubbed nominations in last year's award's deliberations. What took those game's places were Hollow Knight, Horizon, Nier, and Wolfenstein 2. I write this to say that just like Hall of Greats, maybe the allies should adopt a more robust voting system for GOTYs. Plus back in stream Ian asked somebody to do this so there ya go.

I'm not sure about this but my experience with online is not so bad. I have matches that are very smooth and matches that can be laggy but it seems to be dependent on the connection of the other player because mine is very good.

But this is an issue I always had with fighting games. I also play SFV on Ps4 online and it is the same there...

It is possible though that on switch more people are on wifi or casual to where they don't have as good of a connection. Maybe that's why more people have these issues.

Dedicated server though would not be the solution, that is for sure I guess.

I love smash and pretty much bought every game at release or close to it. I'm the only one not buying Ultimate until all of the 5 DLC characters are released. I don't even own a Switch yet.

World of Light isn't purrfect but it's the best single player in a fighting game I've ever played.

As someone who isn't very competitive I'm so happy with it <3
