The future of 3D devices seems confusing and uncertain. It's frustrating that Leia and ZTE have been so silent about their upcoming products. Going six months without an update is definitely not a good sign.

I remember 3d as a child. Amazing circular slides of photographs looking through a viewer. The effect was surreal. Also there were comics which had double colour printing with 2 colour plastic glasses. Poor quality but had the amazement effect. Then seeing the creature from the black lagoon with 3d glasses. Was a bit dark and not very clear no wonder the trend failed in the 50s. More recently I had a Nintendo 3d and a LG 49" 4k 3d tv. The TV was great as it was right at the end of the whole craze so the 3d and glasses were about as best as you were gonna get. Very good. Nintendo 3d was awkward, heavy to hold and quite a fuzzy picture I thought so not surprised they dropped it.

I think the main resources should go to making glassfree screens for actual existing devices (laptops, monitors, TVs, tablets and mobile).

The Nubia Red Magic 3D Explorer uses a different technology to Leia's Lume Pad. Instead of the diffractive lightfield backlight, a switchable light refraction LCD array is used here, which is located in front of the LCD TFT display. Similar to the lightfield backlight, this allows the user to switch between 2D and 3D mode without losing the native display resolution. I assume the Red Magic pad can display 3D images only in landscape mode. With a diffractive lightfield backlight, 3D views are available in portrait AND landscape display orientation.
A diffractive light field backlight is superior for devices that can be used in landscape and portrait mode, such as smartphones or tablets. The disadvantage is the increased power consumption for the second set of extra bright edge-LEDs for the 3D-lightfield mode.

It’s worth pointing out that they present the 3d feature of this tablet in portrait mode.

Did anyone see this coming? What are your thoughts on this Red Magic glasses free 3D tablet?

Cool to see but all these China made devices won't be coming to NA and sure NA don't want too much China devices either because of all what they carry secretly that we are not fully aware. Still, it's nice to see 3D is still a thing for many.

Incredibly annoying that ZTE announces another 3D tablet before releasing the first one. I'm hoping that its just a new marketing name for the Nubia Pad 3D II to emphasize gaming. I'm also hoping that the bad software that you described on their Voyage phone is not indicative of their tablet apps. Meanwhile, enough of these small phone and tablet 3D displays, when you could be reviewing the new Acer SpatialLabs 27" 3D monitors!

Is 3D displays even worth it? Its intriguing, but i wonder if id better just buy VR.
